In the last pages of Whistling in the Dark, Troo and Sally go to visit their mother with Eddie and Nell. On the way over Nell tells them her and Eddie are getting married, and they stop and get some Coca-Cola to bring over to their grandma’s. When she gets there she sees pink and argyle socks (like the boy who chased her down’s socks) and assumes Uncle Paulie is the murderer. Then they get to the hospital and see their mother. Her mother then tells Sally that Officer Rasmussen is actually her father, and that she’s for sure going to live with them. Sally then tells her mom how her dad told her to tell her mom that she forgives him, and she figures out that she is forgiving her for cheating on him. They then go back home, and Troo tells Sally that she was basically the one who caused the crash. She put her hand over her dad’s eyes, and was trying to play “peek-a-boo” with him, and that’s why Uncle Paulie always says “peek-a-boo” and Troo can’t handle being around him. This is also why Sky King (Troo’s dad) told Sally to tell Troo it wasn’t her fault, and she finally does tell her what he said. The next day Sally and Troo take their belongings out of the house, and say goodbye to the landlord. She gives Sally one of her favorite books, and it’s obvious she’s sorry and is going to miss them. They then start staying with Officer Rasmussen, or Dave as they now call him. Mary Lane, Troo, and Sally then create a plan to catch who they think is the murderer and molester. Mary Lane told Sally and Troo she thought she saw Bobby with a tennis shoe and other things from the two girls that died. One night during a baseball game, with Troo on look-out, and Sally opening the shed Mary Lane gets in to look for these things. She gets in and finds it, but it’s too late and Bobby comes. Bobby thinks Mary Lane is at home, and tells Sally how he has a special plan for her. He drags her to the lagoon, and Mary Lane goes to tell the police. Bobby tells Sally there’s no way the police will catch him, and he knocked out Troo. When he finally reaches the lagoon, Sally gets up and runs to the zoo. She leads him around and eventually he tries to catch her, but ends up falling in the zoo with Sampson, Sally’s favorite gorilla/animal at the zoo. Things start to go back to normal after that, and Sally and Troo’s mom comes home. Sally believes her mom and Dave are going to get married, and also that Nell is pregnant. The books ends at the start of the school year. I really loved this book, it was addicting, and I’d recommend it to anyone.
