Insurgent 216-316

After the attack, Jack Kang brings everyone to a meeting where the Divergent step out and reveal themselves. Marcus is among the ones who step out. After that is done, Jack decides that they can't attack the Erudite and will arrange a peace agreement with Jeanine Matthews. Later that day Tris spots Tori and Zeke coming towards the compound. Zeke is carrying the wounded Tori. Tris stops Dauntless guards from shooting them and she helps Tori out. Zeke tells them that Tori got shot because the Dauntless traitors found out that they were spies. They tell them that they became spies because they were surrounded by Dauntless traitors were the simulation ended and they just went along with them. They wait for Tobias to get back from gathering information about the meeting between Jack and Jeanine before they leave to go spy on the meeting. Tobias finds out that they will be meeting on a bridge between the compounds in two days and that Jeanine will be sending a representative instead of going herself. During those two days, Tobias becomes tired of people calling him a coward because he ran away from his father. After a Dauntless calls him a coward during lunch, he finds Marcus and beats him up in front of everyone. Now, it is time to spy on the meeting. The group hides underneath the bridge and waits for the representative from Erudite. Jeanine sends Max to the meeting. Max informs Jack that it will not be a negotiation because they aren't on even footing. He tells Jack to return the Dauntless leader they have in captivity unharmed, to allow the compound to be searched by Erudite soldiers to find the Divergent, and to provide the Erudite with the names of people who did not get injected with the simulation serum. Tris figures out that Max has an earpiece in and that Jeanine is telling him what to say from a glass building. Tris and a couple others start to head toward the building as Lynn shoots Max. They get to the building and see Jeanine and Peter running into an alley. They chase them for a little bit until Peter stops them. They head back to the Candor headquarters. Once they get back, all the Dauntless gather together to discuss what happened and what to do. They decide that they can't stay at Candor any longer and that they need to elect leaders. They nominate Tris, Tobias, Tori, and Harrison, an older Dauntless. Tris denies her nomination so that they wouldn't have to vote for the three leaders. Before they leave to head back to the Dauntless compound, they find Eric, interrogate him, and kill him. Once they get to Dauntless headquarters, everyone splits up to paintball all the cameras so the Erudite can't see them. Once that is over, Tris and Tobias get on a train to have a meeting with Evelyn. The two decide to make an alliance between the Dauntless and the factionless. Early the next morning, Christina wakes Tris to show her something. They head to the roof of the compound to find Marlene, Hector, and a young Dauntless standing on the ledge of the roof. They are in the simulation. They tell Tris that every two days until one of the Divergent goes to Erudite headquarters, this is happen again. After the message, the three of them step off the ledge. Tris was quick enough to save Hector, but the other two fell to their death. Later that day, the Dauntless discuss what they should do about the situation at hand.

The Death Cure 265-325

Thomas said he needed time to be alone and think things through. They put him in a room all by himself and he thought about the procedure. He thought about his friends and the friends he has seen die. He asked the lady if he could eat steak and all these other things for one last meal and she said the best they can do is a couple of sandwiches. He hoped his friends and Right Arm were going to make it in time to stop this procedure. Janson the Rat Man came into the room telling him that it was time and they needed to hurry. They put him on the bed and gave him a sedative to calm his nerves and then he heard an explosion and realized his friends were breaking into the building. The doctor said they needed to hurry and do the procedure before they got to them. Thomas tried talking to them but no words came out of his mouth because of the drugs. They put him completely under and Thomas passed out thinking this was it the last time he would be alive. In the darkness of his own mind he realized he was asleep still and that meant he must not be dead. He woke up to someone calling his name. There was a folder laying next to his bed with a letter from Chancellor Page saying they had everything they needed and did not need to kill Thomas in order to finish the blue print. She gave him a map of the facility and told him to gather up all the immunes and escape through the back door of the facility and lead a happy life. On his way to find his friends he is jumped by Janson and another man hell bent on wanting to finish the procedure. They hold him down and Thomas waits for the perfect time to get lose and he does and takes the knife away from Janson. He tells how they made him a killer and how he could kill both of them. He throws the knife at the other guy and lands right in his neck killing him and Thomas runs off Janson following him. He reaches Right Arm guards and they tell Janson to leave so he does. He tells Minho and Gally the plan to save the rest of the Immunes who were in the Maze. They all agree to help along with Teresa, Brenda, Jorge, and Aris. They get into the Maze and run to the Glade and gather the 500 people into groups each lead by people who have been in the Maze before and they run for the Griever hole to escape. They get there and inside Grievers were starting to activate but Thomas kills all except one before they get out of their pods. They kill the last one and escape into the maintenance room where the back door was. Janson was waiting for them and they all fight them and kill both of them but Teresa gets crushed by rock falling from the building collapsing and dies. They escape through the flat trans to a distant place away from everyone. They burn the building and the flat trans and start to rebuild humanity.

The Death Cure 165-265

After Thomas's friends find him they see what happened to the bounty hunter and Thomas doesnt tell them about how the Rat Man tried to talk to him about coming back to WICKED. They decide to go back to the Berg and check up on Newt and see how he was doing. They notice that less and less people are walking around the city and it makes them feel uneasy. They get to the berg and Newt is nowhere to be found. They search the ship and find a note that says he left with other Cranks to live in the Crank city not far from Denver. Thomas and his friends decide to go after him and try to get him to join with them again. They fly the berg to the crank city and touch down where two guards were waiting. They asked what they were doing here and Thomas told them they were looking for their friend who came through here. The guards asked if they had a death wish coming to this city. Jorge then told them that he would pay them 3000 dollars to escort them through the cities and they agreed. They walk through the city witnessing how horrible it is. They go to the old bowling alley where they found Newt sitting with a launcher in his hand. Thomas goes up to talk to him but Newt tells them to leave. Thomas tries reasoning with him but he sees the wildness in Newt's eyes. After a fight broke out and Newt pointed a launcher in Thomas's face they leave Newt behind. They make a run for the berg being chases by Cranks and took off to go back to Denver. When they arrived things seemed even quieter than normal. People met them in the street and told them to get into the van with bags over their heads and were taken to a building. Other people where in this building captured and Thomas meets up with Teresa and Aris there and asked how they escaped from WICKED. Then they decided to get answers of why all these people where here. They took one guys pistol and interogated them. They said they worked for Right Arm the people who Thomas was helping. Confused they wanted to go see who was in charge and one man named Lawrence took Brenda and Thomas to the building in a van where the people in charge were. After driving through crank infested streets they arrived to the building and Vince and Gally were there. They told him the plan on how they were going to invade WICKED and all they needed was Thomas to get into the base and set off a weapon they developed that would shut down all of WICKED's weapons. He agreed and so Lawrence, Thomas, and a pilot headed toward a berg to drop Thomas out in the woods where he would go into the WICKED facility to act like he was coming back to finish the tests. On their way out there they went by some cranks fighting in the street and Thomas saw Newt. He remembered what the note said that Newt wrote how he wanted him to kill him. He went out there and tried to get Newt to come with but he was to far gone and just wanted Thomas to kill him so he did. They get to the Berg and drop Thomas into the woods. He makes it to WICKED and goes to the door where Rat Man was there to greet him. They talked about what needed to be done and Thomas went into the bathroom to set the weapon. He goes into the office where Rat Man said the final thing they need to do is gather a piece of brain tissue from Thomas's brain and this procedure would kill him. He agreed to do it.

The Scorch Trials 1-51

Thomas woke up to Teresa calling him in his head. They talked for awhile, wondering what was going to happen the next day, and then went back to bed. Later, while Thomas was dreaming, he thought he heard Teresa yelling his name, but couldn't shake his deep sleep. She kept yelling Thomas and that something was wrong and help, but still Thomas could not wake up. When he finally did, he couldn't believe his eyes. Everybody was running around crazy. Their were bars on the windows and people outside with the "disease" and Thomas asked Minho what was going on. He told him that they all just woke up and it was like this. People were climbing on the windows yelling, "Kill Me!" and their was no sign of the people who saved them the day before. All of the Gladers realized the diseases people couldn't get in cause of the bars, but knew they had to do something. Thomas then remembered Teresa had asked for help and he tried calling to her, but heard nothing. He then told the others that something was wrong with Teresa, and they agreed to try and help find her. The only door leading outside was locked and chained from the inside, so they couldn't get out that way and didn't know how anybody could have gotten out, even the people who saved them. Thomas then went over to the door that led to the commons area where they had eaten the night before. That door was locked too, but not chained. Minho grabbed a fire extinguisher and hit the door knob till it gave. Once it did they stumbled into the dark commons area trying to find the lights. When Newt found the switches he turned them on. What they saw shocked them. Everybody who had saved them the night before, were hanging from the ceiling, dead. They had no idea how this was possible. Thomas then remembered he still had to get to Teresa. The only other door was hers, on the other side of the commons are, where she had slept. He then took the fire extinguisher and knocked her door knob off too. He bursted into the room and found nothing, but her unmade bed. He then though, heard the toilet flush and was excited that she was still there, but he tried calling to her and there was nothing. The door then opened and a boy came out. They didn't know who the boy was, but made him talk. They wanted to know everything about him. He had told them that he was from a maze too, but in his he was the only boy, and the rest were girls. All of the Gladers then knew that he was another experiment. Thomas then asked him if he could speak with one of the girls telepathically, and he said yes. Then they tried it and they could hear eachother. In Thomas's head, the boy told him that they had killed the girl who he had telepathy with, and the boy began to cry. After that, a loud siren went off and the lights in the common are were off. When Minho turned them back on, all of the dead, hanging, bodies were gone. They had no idea how this was possible because nobody could have had time to do that, let alone get in this building and lock it all back up without them knowing. They then went back over to where they had slept and everything was proper again. The windows even had brick over them instead of bars. They then knew that something was going on and this was some sort of game. Their next test. So then Thomas went and laid down and slept, trying to call to Teresa. He then heard an answer that he did not want to hear. It was her, but it wasn't. She said that she didn't know who this was talking to her and for him to leave her alone and get out of her head. Thomas then asked her questions about what was going on and why she didn't know him, but she just told him to leave her alone or she'd kill him. Thomas then somehow fell asleep. He awoke to Newt giving him an apple. He asked where he had gotten it from, and Newt said that a whole bunch of food suddenly appeared in the commons area, along with another thing. Interested, and pushing all other thoughts of Teresa aside, Thomas went into the room. He saw that there was a man in a white suit sitting at a desk, reading a book. Thomas then asked everyone who he was, but they said he said that they would tell him when he was ready. Then Thomas approached the desk, but ran into an invisible, glass wall. The others said that they tried that and tried knocking on it. Thomas didn't know how this was possible, but he wanted answers. He knocked on the "glass" and the man in the white suit put down his book saying, "how many times do I have to tell you, we still have forty-seven minutes before I have to implement Phase Two of the Trials."

The Maze Runner Book Review

Book Title: The Maze Runner
Author: James Dashner
Year of Publication: 2009
Number of Pages: 374

I. Plot Summary-A bunch of kids ages 10-17 are in a maze. They have no idea how they got there or how to get out. They started a civilization there called the Glade. Their memories are faint about their lives before now. Thomas shows up there and people start wondering what is going on. After Thomas shows up, a girl shows up as well. She is the first girl ever to show up in the Glade, and tells them she triggered the ending. They have no idea what this means, but hope that they can figure it out. Once everything in the maze starts to change, they all realize that the only thing they can do, is go into the maze and find a way out.
II. Literary Elements
A. Narrator-Third Person, "My name is Thomas, he thought."p.1
B. Protagonist- Thomas- He is the person in the Glade that feels like he knows why he's there and then is the one to figure out how to get out. "And yet he didn't know where he came from, or how he'd gotten inside the dark lift, or who his parents were." p.2
C. Antagonist-The Creators, The Grievers- The Creators are the people who created the maze and put the kids in there. The Grieves are the monsters that try and keep the Gladers from escaping. "Just like the little lizardlike machines that spy on us for the Creators-the people who sent us here." p.237 "Well he has been through the Changing-Griever stung him in the middle of the day just outside the West Door."p.226
D. Setting- Usually in the Glade, it is sunny and always perfect weather. Once the "ending" starts though, the whole maze just turns gray. "Looks like a big gray ceiling-close enough you could almost touch it."p. 298
E. Conflict- Man vs. Nature- Gladers vs Grievers and Gladers vs Creators. "The Griever came to life, spikes popping out its skin; it rolled forward, ready to collide head-on with its foe." p. 134 "The Creators Minho said; then he spat on the floor. Im gonna break your faces!" p. 352
F. Theme- Don't ever give up. No matter what happens, things can always get better. "Over two years and so few dead. Amazing." p. 353
III. Reflection- I liked this book very much because it was very interesting and not a type of book that their are a lot of. It somewhat reminded me of the Enclave and Outpost because of the people being in their own societies when the world all goes to crap. It would make a great movie because it has a great story for a movie. They actually are making it into a movie. I believe its supposed to come out in 2014. I would recommend the book to anybody who likes the Enclave series or Hunger Game series. It did, in a way, end the way i expected it to. I don't wish it would have ended differently because their are sequels to it.

The Maze Runner 325-374

As they reached the opening, the Grievers were surrounding the hole. They all realized what they had to do. In order to have any chance at living they all had to fight. The Gladers decided that Thomas, Chuck, and Teresa would be the ones to go into the hole and try to figure everything out. Without looking back, they all jumped in, Thomas waiting to make sure the other two made it. Once in the hole, they saw a computer and keypad. Thomas decided to have Teresa go and put the words into the computer in case a Griever came through the hole. Sure enough, just as she started, a Griever plopped down there. Thomas fought it off and ended up killing it and then rushed over to help Teresa. She couldn't get the last word "PUSH" to enter into the computer. Once Chuck saw it, he told them that maybe it meant push that button on the wall over there. Once they did that, a door opened toward them. It led into a long black hallway. They then had everybody come down, of which only twenty were left including Chuck, Teresa, and Thomas. Twenty one had died. They all decided to head down the hallway and see what happened. Thomas felt good about it, but was just hoping their wouldn't be any more Grievers down there. At the end, their was a long slide with a gooey substance on it that smelled bad. They slid down it and landed on top of each other in an open area with a building in front of them. It was the Creators. Just sitting there, watching them. Minho yelled and wanted to kill them and everybody started yelling and things and then a woman and young man walked out of the building towards the Gladers. She then told them that their life would be better now and didn't say much else. They then noticed that the one young man was Gally. He told them that the Creators could control him. He then threw a knife at Thomas and Chuck jumped in front of him. The knife hit Chuck and killed him. When this happened, something came over Thomas. He was filled with rage and beat the crap out of Gally. Then, a bunch of people came running in there and killed the woman. The Gladers didn't know what was going on, but followed the people as instructed. They led them to a bus and went for a long ride. Thomas asked a lady on there what was going on and she told him that the sun had produced balls of sun that came to the earth and burnt things up and then a horrible disease set in that may be able to be cured, but only in the Andes. They were a long ways away from there though, but wanted to get there. The only thing holding them back was a wall of sun (fire) at what used to be called the equator, called the Scorch. She then turned away. They took all of the Gladers into a nice room filled with clean beds and food. Teresa got her own room and Thomas missed her right away. They then talked to each other telepathically though, and said it was going to be ok. They then fell asleep.

The Death Cure 65-165

They make their way to the hangar with weapons in hand and they get to a huge room where guards where all tied up. Confused they approach one and interrogate one of them asking what happened to them. The guard said that the others that got their memories back broke out and escaped. They took out all of the guards and tied them up and stole one of the ships and left. Thomas thinks about why they would do that after seeming so willingly to work for WICKED and was hurt a little that they did not try to come back for him, Minho, and Newt. They went to the next hangar looking for Jorge and found him on the ground knocked out and they woke him up. He said they came in here and took one of the ships but his was still here. Jorge shakes off the confusion and talks to the guys and Brenda asking what they should do. Guards burst into the hangar shooting at them so they all raised their guns and fired back. They cornered them and ran for the Berg. Jorge opened the door to the ship and they all ran to it then Brenda was his by a electric grenade and Thomas went back to get her. He got her up then while running to the ship Thomas was hit by a grenade and passed out. He woke up with guns pointed in his face and for a second he thought his friends left him then they were all tackled to the ground by Minho and Newt. They dragged him to the ship and they flew off. They headed for Denver to settle down. Jorge made fake papers for all of them but Newt since he was infected and could not get into the city so he stayed on the ship. Jorge, Minho, Thomas, and Brenda entered the city and ate. They thought the first thing they needed to do was find a Doctor who could take out the chip in Thomas and Minho's brain. Then a mysterious man approached them and said they need their help and gave them a note and walked off. The note was from Gally and Thomas was shocked and said they need to go see him and see what he wants. They go to the apartment on the note and enter the place and Gally was there scarred up and not looking to good. He tells Thomas how he faked going insane and escaped WICKED and now he needs help bringing it down. Thomas told the man he was immune the man turned out to be a bounty hunter so he was going to sell Thomas and he takes him at gun point to a car then a police bot came and blew away the bounty hunter and on the screen was the Rat Man. He told Thomas he needs to come back and finish the tests so they can find a cure and cure his friend Newt. Thomas told him he would think about it.

The Maze Runner 225-324

When they went back to the Glade, they told Newt and Alby of what they had found.Thomas then went over to the jail to see Teresa. He explained to her what they had found and told her all about it. That night, something weird happened in the Glade. When they awoke, all a few hours late, the sun was not shining. Their was just a grayish light hovering over the glade. Nobody knew what was going on, and they were all worried. Thomas and Minho then went out into the maze to see if anything had changed. They found out that none of the walls had moved from the night before. They then went back, knowing it was going to be dark again soon. Once it was time for the doors of the Glade to shut, they didn't. This then led to panic, and everybody hustling to get work done so they could protect themselves that night. After all of the windows and doors were boarded up in the homestead, they all tried to catch some sleep. Thomas was laying by Teresa, knowing that she'd be safe by him. Then, later that night, Thomas awoke to the sound of grievers coming into the Glade. Everybody was completely silent in fear that the grievers would come and kill them all. The grievers however, only took one person and then left. They continued to do this for several more nights. One morning when Thomas woke up, he noticed that smoke was coming from the Map room. He rushed in there with Newt and Minho following him, and found that all the maps were burned. This was especially devastating because he had a new theory of how the maps could be a clue to get out of the maze. He then went and talked to Teresa and convinced Newt to let her out of the jail. Newt did so, and then told Thomas that him and Minho had hid the maps the night before in fear that something would happen to him. At this news, Thomas ran to the cellar where they had hid the maps and began to get to work. He, Teresa, Newt, and Minho found that the maps of each section made words and that the words could be clues. They didn't know how though, and fear struck them that it didn't make sense. Right then, Thomas knew what he had to do. He had to get stung by a griever in order to go through the changing and get some of his memories back. He didn't tell anybody he was going to, but the next night when the grievers came he followed them and was stung by them multiple times. Before he passed out, he told Teresa and Newt not to worry, for he did it on purpose. Thomas then went through the changing and when he awoke, he could remember very much. He then asked Newt to call a gathering, and do it very quickly. Once at the gathering, Thomas told them all he remembered. He told them how he knew that they had to go through the griever hole and punch in the codes in order to exit the maze and how he and Teresa knew each other prior to this. They had been in on the creation of the maze, because they were very smart and were telepathic. He told them though, that it was against their will to do it, and that he swore he didn't want to. All of the keepers believed him and decided to take his advice. Although Newt knew not all of the gladers would go with, he agreed that they needed to do something in order to get out of there. Newt then decided that they would go that night. Thomas and Teresa talked to each other after the gathering, and were both sure that this was the right thing to do. They didn't know how many people would die, but they knew that there was nothing left to lose.

I. Plot Summary- Cassia lives in a society where everything is decided for her. She believes that the society is perfect, and that they would never harm anyone. When she is matched with Xavier, she falls in love with Ky, which is pretty much illegal for her to do. After Ky is booted out of Oria to go to war, Cassia is destined to find him. Her family is moved to an Outer Province to farm, so she is sent on work leave for three months. Cassia then has the bright idea to somehow escape and find her true love.
II. Literary Elements-
A. Narrator- First Person “I can’t wait.” p. 4
B. Protagonist- Cassia is a seventeen year old girl who is just recently matched with the guy who she will spend the rest of her life with. Fortunately, her match, Xavier, is from the same society and is her best friend. “This is a dream.” p. 15
C. Antagonist- The society is very controlling and tells people how they have to run their lives. They don’t get a choice as to who they love, where they work, and when they day. The society will do anything to get their people to believe that they are good and not the enemy. “I know about the poison in the food for people like Grandfather.” p. 340
D. Setting- This book takes place in a society in the Oria Province in Mapletree Borough. Everything is known to be perfect and nothing bad will happen to anyone. At first, the mood is reassuring because you know that the people will be safe, but then you figure out that the society isn’t who they say they are. It then makes you wonder what is going to happen. “Without the trees and without the name, Mapletree Borough is gone.” p. 359
E. Conflict- Cassia and Ky are now trying to go against what the society tells them to do. This is said to be man v. society. “The Official sees the twist of my lips and launches into a list of examples, of ways I’ve broken with the Society’s rules in the past two months...” p. 341
F. Theme- Importance of freedom is one major factor. In this utopian or ‘perfect’ society, the government has destroyed basic rights and has also taken free will from its people. “...and then the nutrition personnel, with all of Grandfather’s deserts...” p. 78
G. Historical Context- This book shows me the difference between the society we live in today and a utopian society. Today, we actually get to make our own rational decisions. In a utopian society, everything is ‘perfect’ and pretty much already decided for you, even whom you will marry! “I watch and wait, determined that the girl my Match will see on the screen in his City Hall somehwhere out there in Society will be poised and calm and lovely, the very best image of Cassia Maria Reyes that I can present.”
III. Reflection- Overall, I think this book was alright, but definitely not my most favorite I’ve ever read. It moves kind of slowly and gives almost too much detail. There were some parts in it where I thought to myself, “Come on. Get on with it already!” If this book was made into a movie, I think it would probably be a better movie than book, but then again maybe not. There would need to be more action in the movie. In this utopian society, they pretty much do the same things over and over each day.

Divergent Book Response

Book Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Year of Publication: 2011
Number of Pages: 487
AR Points Awarded: 16

II. Literary Elements
A. Narrator- First person "What did it say?" I ask. p. 34
B. Protagonist- Beatrice- She was raised in Abnegation, but transferred into Dauntless at the Choosing Ceremony because she was Divergent. She is unlike most people because she is Divergent, which is very dangerous if the wrong people find out. She shined in Dauntless initiation because of this. She is very smart and became a leader when the war broke out. People looked to her to find out what they should do next. "And how are we supposed to wake them up?" Marcus says. "We find the computers that control the simulation and destroy the data," I say. "The program. Everything." p. 453
C. Antagonist- Herself- Because she is Divergent, she has to be very careful not to show it. During the initiation, if she would show it, she would be killed immediately. She struggles with this because she needs to do good in initiation to stay in Dauntless but not too good as to show her Divergence. "Don't play stupid," he says. "I suspected it last time, but this time it's obvious. You manipulated the simulation; you're Divergent. I'll delete the footage, but unless you want to wind up dead at the bottom of the chasm, you'll figure out how to hide it during the simulations! Now, if you'll excuse me." p. 255
D. Setting- "Their primary purpose is to guard the fence that surrounds our city. From what I don't know." p. 7 "I can see places where the yellow lines used to be. We have no use for them now that there are so few cars. We don't need spotlights, either, but in some places they dangle precariously over the road like they might crash down any minute." p. 24 The book takes place in a futuristic, isolated Chicago, where the city is divided into factions, or groups of people.
E. Conflict- Man v. Self   Beatrice has to figure out how to hide her Divergence, or be killed. 255
F. Theme- Make your own choices, don't let others make your life-changing decisions for you. "I open my eyes and thrust my arm out. My blood drips onto the carpet between the two bowls. Then, with a gasp I can't contain, I shift my hand forward, and my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave. p. 47
G. Historical Context-  The Chicago that we know of today has been changed greatly. For better or for worse. "Their primary purpose is to guard the fence that surrounds our city. From what I don't know." p. 7 "I can see places where the yellow lines used to be. We have no use for them now that there are so few cars. We don't need spotlights, either, but in some places they dangle precariously over the road like they might crash down any minute." p. 24

III. Reflection
I liked this book because it is fast-paced and has never-ending action. It combines war and utopian societies. I can't relate to any characters because this book talks about a world completely different from the one we live in today. This book would make a good movie because it keeps your attention and takes unexpected twists and turns. I would recommend this book to people who like books with futuristic settings and many plot twists. It didn't end the way I thought it would because I didn't think a war between factions would happen, but I wouldn't change the way it ended.

The Always War Book Response

Book Title: The Always War
Author: Margaret Peterson Haddix
Year of Publication: 2011
Number of Pages: 197
Ar Points: 6

II. Literary Elements
A. Narrator- Third Person "We were next door neighbors," Tessa said. p.3
B. Protagonist- Tessa- She used to be a next door neighbor to Gideon Thrall, who was a war hero, until he decided to refuse the award. Then, Tessa needed to find out why. She followed Gideon and ended up into enemy territory. She becomes the person that needs to be carried through everything and is a pain to have with him. "What are we going to do?" Tessa asked. "What is it," Tessa asked. p.151-152
C. Antagonist- The war- The country has been at war for a very long time. They get on a plane that takes them into enemy territory, but it's not like Gideon remembered. The war has been over for years but no one knows about it. Tessa and Gideon struggle to find out the answers. "That was the war," the computer voice said harshly. p. 171
D. Setting- "There was, actually, very little in sight. Very little except for a vast field of grass, stretching out in all directions. Or--was this still what you would call grass? In Tessa's experience grass was tufts of muddied green blades that tried to spring up in bare patches of dirt, when people didn't trample it too badly. She'd seen pictures in books of expansive lawns trimmed to almost scientific perfection in the luxurious, prodigal era before the war began. But that had always seemed too fantastical to believe, like gazing at drawings of unicorns or fairies or trolls." p. 99-100 The setting creates a feeling that we have it pretty good the way we are living now.
E. Conflict- Man v. Society - The government hasn't been telling the public what is really happening with the war. "I deserve answers," Gideon said, standing up, "No more lies. What's really going on here? Why doesn't the war zone look like the satellite footage? Why don't the bombs fall when you say they're going to? What happened out there?" p. 144-145
F. Theme- Don't believe everything people tell you, some things will be exaggerated or a lie. "Delusional," the general muttered. "Irrational. All three of them are out of their minds." p. 145
G. Historical Content- The world was a much better place before the war. "There was, actually, very little in sight. 99-100

III. Reflection
I liked the book because it combined two things I like to read about, war and utopian societies. I don't think I could relate to any characters because I have never been in any of the situations as those in the book. I think it would make a great movie because the action is never ending. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fast paced books about war and futuristic worlds. I didn't end the way I thought it would, but I wouldn't change the way it did end.

Gone With the Wind 701-800

Ashley performs Gerald's funeral service, and after the service, Will Benteen announces his engagement to Scarlett's sister, Suellen. Scarlett gave Gerald's gold watch to one of the former slaves, Pork, as thanks for all his hard work. Scarlett learns that Ashley is going to move to New York with Melanie because he can't handle being around Scarlett all the time because he is so in love with her. Scarlett is really upset over this, so Melanie, not knowing about Ashley's real reason to want to move, convinces Ashley that they should stay at Tara. After Suellen and Will's wedding, Carreen enters a nunnery. Ashley, Melanie, and their son move to a house next to Aunt Pitty's in Atlanta, and Melanie is very popular amongst the Southern women. Scarlett gives birth to a girl, and names her Ella. Scarlett wants to immediately go back to work after the child, but her husband won't let her because he's concerned about her in the dangerous city of Atlanta. Scarlett begins talking to a man named Archie who was in jail for forty years for murdering his wife. She tells him that she wants to lease convicts to work at the sawmill, but he tells her it's a terrible idea. When Georgia won't pass a law that makes African Americans citizens, the south is very happy, but they know that the Yankees will be even harder on them after that. Against Archie's advice, Scarlett hired convicts to work at the sawmill. Rhett comes to visit Scarlett to remind her that he loaned the money for her to buy the sawmill, as long as she didn't use it to help Ashley. However, Scarlett has been paying Ashley for helping at the mill. Frank also kind of insinuates that Frank may be having an affair with her, but he doesn't say much. Tension between the Blacks and the Whites is growing in the South. Scarlett is attacked by a poor white man, but Big Sam, a former slave at Tara, saves her. She also learns that the convicts at her sawmill have been starved, whipped, and overworked by their overseer. She's mad, but she knows that she wouldn't get as much work done without them.
