Where She Went 1-84

Adam is a rock star that lives in L.A. with his girlfriend Bryn. Bryn is a model and actress that is out of country for awhile for a shooting. Adam is about ready to go on tour with his band, but has one more day and night left in New York before his plane flies out. He goes to a meeting with a journalist that wants to ask him questions about the band's last album and upcoming tour. Once he arrives, his agent sits at the bar while Adam talks with the reporter. She starts off by asking him questions about the album, but quickly switches the subject to Bryn and also one of his old girlfriends, Mia. Mia is also famous, but is a cellist. This angered Adam because he didn't want to think about Mia. Three years ago had been the last time Adam had talked and been with Mia. Her family had died in a car accident and she was in the hospital for awhile. Once she got out, she had Broken up with Adam and had spoken to him since. He didn't know why she did, but it hurt him very much. One of her friends had stopped by at his house once, and he was hoping that she came to talk to him about Mia, but she hadn't.
Adam then flipped out on the reporter, calling her names and telling her how this interview was supposed to be about the album, not about personal things. Adam and his agent then left, and went back to the hotel. His agent told him to just relax in the hotel and they'd be flying out in about 24 hours. Adam tried relaxing, but couldn't. He was nervous about the tour and just needed to get some air. So he left the hotel, leaving his cell phone behind. He started walking and kept walking until he had gotten to the park. Once at the park he realized that Mia was playing in a theater just across the street. He debated or not whether to go in, knowing how much it would hurt to see her, but he did anyway. He told himself that he would just listen, but not actually see her, and then he would leave. After the performance however, Mia's agent came up to Adam and asked him to come back stage. Apparently all of the people in the crowd paying attention to Adam caught Mia's attention. Once back there, he looked at Mia, but could not say anything. He was speechless. He didn't want to yell at her or ask why she did what she did, but he just stood there, silent. Finally she broke the ice and they began to talk. Adam then realized he had to get out of there, it was too hard. He shook her hand, and when he did he almost fell to pieces. He then left and tried to catch a cab. He had to wait to get one, and while he did, Mia caught up to him. She asked if he wanted to grab a bite to eat, and he said yes. Once they did, paparazzi began to follow them and Adam was afraid Bryn would see he was with Mia, and that she would get upset. He never had told her what exactly happened. Adam and Mia then began to run and they crossed over a fence that deterred the paparazzi. Once back there, they began to talk again, forgetting that they had originally gone to eat, until Mia's stomach growled.

War Brides 211-311

War Brides 211-311

When a German airplane flew low over Crowmarsh Priors one Saturday afternoon it sent mothers into a rush trying to locate their children and bring them to safety. The English were in pursuit of the German aircrafts trying to force it away from the village before they shot it down. In it’s desperate attempt to escape it veered off towards some storm clouds but didn’t make it, moments later it was spiraling to the ground in an open valley. The whole town whooped and hollered their aircrafts as the disappeared into the sky. Oliver Hammet who was part of the four members of the village home guard hurried to gather their rifles and meet with the other members. The four men sett out to locate the aircraft on foot. By the time Oliver reached the valley where the aircraft had crashed he was the only one left, the other three had to stop due to medical reasons that had stopped them from joining the forces in the first place. Oliver the vicar of the village or in other words the pastor of the church. He didn’t know if he could shoot a man even if it was to save his own life! As he moved closer to the burning aircraft he could smell something awful and could only guess what it was. There were two figures laying on the ground 200 yards from the burning aircraft. The first man was face down and obviously not alive, the second man however wasn’t so lucky. He lay twisted on his back, there was a whole in his face where his nose had been, and he was bleeding from his scalp as well. There was nothing Oliver could do for him he’d been there for nearly two hours so he just sat down next to him and prayed. The man wanted something out of his pocket Oliver removed a picture of the pilots wife and helped him hold it until he died. The picture made him think of several of the girls in the village. Many girls had fiancés that were in the service and more than one were expecting children soon. Before the men could come back and be married they were killed in the war leaving the girls to be shamed by the village. He decided then and there he would ask all the mothers to let their children be baptized in church despite to rules against it. Meanwhile Frances was waiting to become  twenty-one she had been offered the position in intelligence but she was not of age yet to make the decision without parental consent and her father said no. However, as soon as Frances turns twenty-one she joins anyway.

Divergent 3-103

All of the sixteen year-old kids from each faction gather at one of the schools in the futuristic Chicago to take an aptitude test. There are five factions in the city. These factions were formed because their ancestors decided that it was the fault of human personality that lead to the warring world they live in now. Each faction blames a certain trait that caused this and value a certain trait that they think is best. Abnegation values selflessness and blame selfishness. Amity blames aggression. Erudite blames ignorance. Candor blames duplicity. The final faction, Dauntless, blames cowardice. Beatrice is a girl from the Abnegation faction. Today, her and her brother, Caleb, will take an aptitude test to show which faction they would fit in best with. The test is actually a dream that will rule out factions by the choices they make inside the dream. Once Beatrice is done with the test, her instructor tells her that she is divergent. This means that her results didn't one faction. The instructor tells her that this is serious and should never tell anyone about this. She has much to think about now before the Choosing Ceremony, where they choose the faction they will belong to for the rest of their life. The next day is the Choosing Ceremony. Once again, all of the kids, or initiates, gather around five bowls, each one filled with something that resembles a different faction. To choose a faction, initiates cut their hand with a knife and let the blood drip into the bowl of their choice. One by one, each person takes their turn as they make this life-changing decision. Caleb goes right before Beatrice and chooses Erudite, which is sort of an enemy of Abnegation. It's finally Beatrice's turn. She slits her hand and holds it over the Dauntless bowl. She is the only person to transfer to Dauntless from Abnegation. The Dauntless get on the train to head back to their headquarters. There is an initiation that the transfers must pass to become a Dauntless member. If they do not pass, they will become factionless, or basically homeless. The first step of initiation is to jump off the train and land on a rooftop. All of them succeed except for one, who didn't make it to the rooftop. Next, they have to jump off the building onto the ground below. Beatrice is the first one to jump and is praised for her courage. All that made it get to go into Dauntless headquarters. It is a very dark and dangerous place. Beatrice is asked by their guide, Four, what her name is, and she says Tris. She chose Tris because she wanted to be known as a new person. Tris also makes a friend, Christina. The two get along well and have the same interests. There next part of initiation is that they have to fight one another and will be ranked. The ranking will show which initiates are the best and only the top so many will actually become a member of the Dauntless. During Christina's fight, she argues with Eric, one of the Dauntless leaders, and gets punished for it. Her punishment is to hang from a rail over a waterfall for five minutes. If she doesn't hang on long enough, she dies. Luckily, she barely hangs on for the time and is pulled to safety.

The Scorch Trials 1-25

Thomas wakes up to the sound of Teresa in his head. She slept for like an hour but then woke up and wanted Tom for company. He stays up with her talking about different things when sleep finally over came him. He had a dream that he was sitting with a strange woman and he asked her if she would go crazy like dad did. Then she said "dont you worry about that because you will not be around to see it and always remember that I love you." Thomas then realized that he was talking to his mother and this must be a distant memory. Then he was awaken by the sound of Teresa's voice who said that there was something wrong. The there was a scream and then Thomas felt disconnected from her and he knew something bad happened. He got up and saw all of the boys running around watching things outside. Then a window breaks and grabbing the bars on the window that will not let the thing in was a deranged bloody mess of a man who was screaming " Kill me, Kill me." over and over. They busted the handle to the door that led to the common room of the building where there were a bunch of dead bodies hanging from the ceiling. They break into the other room on the other side of the room to find Teresa and when he breaks the door he finds a note that says Teresa Agnis. They go in their and a boy is in their named Aris. He tells Thomas and the guys he escaped a Maze but instead he was with a bunch of girls and he was the only guy there. Thomas then finds out that he could also talk to the new guy Aris in his head just like he could with Teresa.

The Maze Runner 300-375

After explaining everything they needed to do, the next step was to convince the whole Glade that they needed to make a run to this computer it was their only chance to get out of this maze. Newt called a gathering with all of the Keepers to discuss the run to the computer. Many of them thought differently on the subject and were skeptical if it would even work. Thomas explained to all of them that it was the only way to end the Maze. He said they would need to make a run to the computer and punch in the codes that the Maze spelled. They were worried that the Grievers would tear them up and kill them all if they made a run to the Griever hole. Thomas then suggested the idea of that the Grievers were only going to take one person a day and so they would not kill all of them just one. The Keepers then said who would be crazy enough to just give up their life to do this. Thomas then said he would do it if he needed too. Newt then made Tom leave and he told him that he would convince them all to do it without him. Teresa then comes to find Tom and sits on the bench with him and he explains the plan of attack to her. Newt then comes back out and tells them everyone is on board. They want to take the fight to the Grievers rather than sit here and just let them pick them off one by one. Alby did not want to help because the world outside of the Maze is terrible and he does not want to go back. Newt convinces him to help them fight back and he agrees to do so. Everyone gathers up supplies during the day. Frypan makes up a bunch of food supplies for everybody and cooks them one last meal. Some of the Gladers thought it would be better to just stay behind and take their chances with the Grievers. Minho and Thomas gathered up all of the weapons and handed them out to everybody. Then night time came and they decided it was now or never to go out and do this. 42 Gladers armed with primitive make shit weapons all head out into the Maze to find the Griever hole. They ran through the Maze and did not hear any signs of Grievers until they made it to the cliff where the hole was at. About 15 grievers surrounded the hole waiting for them. They all wait in silence to scared to think of anything to do at the moment. Then Alby rushes the group of Grievers screaming at the top of his lungs to sacrifice himself as the one and the machine blobs tear him apart in front of everyone. Then the Grievers start to make their way toward the group of Gladers showing that the one person a day no longer goes like that. They decided it was now or never and all charge the group of Grievers. The group decided everyone would make a whole and Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck would jump into the whole and punch the code it. They saw a hole and rushed into the pack holding hands getting cut up and stabbed with things then they finally jumped into the hole. Teresa finds the computer with her flashlight and starts punching in the code when a griever comes into the hole. Tom fights it off with his spear and manages to kill it. Then another one comes and the last code word PUSH will not work on the computer until they see a button underneath that said KILL MAZE and she pushed it and the Griever shut down before it hurt Tom. Everything was silent then the surviving Gladers jumped into the hole. Minho, Newt, and Frypan along with 15 other Gladers made it about half. They walk into a door and see the Creators behind windows talking then a woman walks into the room with Gally who explains how they can control him. At that note Gally whips out a knife and throws it at Thomas then Chuck leaps in front of him and takes it to the chest. Thomas enraged beats the hell out of Gally and was restrained back. Then from behind a loud crash and many people with guns stormed the building shooting the woman and take off with the Gladers. They tell them all they are safe on a bus and will no longer be an experiment and tells them about the Flare disease and how it came. They arrive at the rebel base and are fed and gave nice beds to sleep in. Everything seemed to be alright at the moment but something seems seriously wrong still.

The Maze Runner 200-300

After the whole ordeal with Teresa, Thomas sat out in the trees by the graveyard in the dark trying to make sense of everything that was going on around them. He then hears Teresa's voice again but it was not in his head she was standing right there watching him. He gets startled but then calms down and they talk about what happened. Thomas learns he is not crazy and that Teresa can talk to him in his head whenever she wants. In the middle of their discussion Newt comes up to them and asks them if they noticed anything weird. They decide nothing is weird just dark like always and then Newt tells them to check the time and he looks and its night time and the gates to the Glade have not shut yet. This means the Grievers can come into the Glade and kill everybody. A panic breaks out and everyone starts to build barricades so they could not come in. They decide everyone should stay in the giant Glade house. They reenforce everything and wait out the night in dread. They can hear the mechanical movements of the Grievers outside and everyone is terrified. Then the door busts open and standing there was Gally who went missing days ago. He was torn up and bloody and breathing heavily. He tells everybody that the Grievers will take just one person every night until they find a way to escape. Then a Griever breaks through the window of the room they were in and grabs Gally. They try to pull him to safety but cant and they take Gally and then all of the Grievers go back into the Maze and leave for the night. Morning came and Thomas goes to talk to Teresa who was safe in the Slammer to talk about her memories. She remembers that the Maze was a code and its not the movements of each individual section over time its the Maze as a whole and it spells out letters. Thomas then runs off to go tell Newt and Minho the news about the Maze and when he finds them they tell him the map room was set on fire and they lost all of the maps that they have recorded over time. He tells them that he has figured out that the Maze is a code and they needed all of those recordings to see what they said. Thomas takes them to Teresa so she could explain it better. After hearing all of that Minho and Newt told Thomas that they actually did not burn any of them they were fake ones and the real ones where in the weapons room safe and sound. They go down there to look at some of them. He gets some wax paper and pencils and cuts squares out of them to make a grid and draw out the maps. After a while Newt feels like it is a waist of time but then after completing the map he sees that the grid plots out a subtle but distinct letter F. Minho and Thomas decide to go out into the maze and see if they can find any new exits that opened up during the night. As they run Teresa talked to Thomas in his head then he finally got the hang of it and started talking back to Teresa in her mind. They return with no new exits but they managed to find out words that the Maze spelled out and keeps repeating. They do not know what the words mean and are in a random sort. After days go by and more people get taken Thomas decides that one of the only ways to get back some of his memory is to go through changing and get stung by a Griever. That night when one of them took Dave he rushes out after it and jumps on top of it and gets stung. He then goes through the changing and finds out the truth behind some things. He tells everyone that the Maze can not be solved and they were put here for an experiment of will to see if they will still keep trying. He does find a way out though and if they type those numbers into the computer it will stop the test and stop the Grievers. The only way to the computer though is through the Griever hole off the cliff.

Book Response for Deadline

Author: Chris Crutcher
Year of Publication: 2007
Number of Pages: 316

I. Plot Summary- Ben Wolf is a senior in high school who finds out that he has an aggressive blood disease when getting his physical for cross country. After finding this out, he decides not to tell anybody and decides to live the rest of his year he has left as normal as he can. Throughout the year he does activities and other things that he would never have done without the courage the disease instilled in him. He decided to play football instead of going out for cross country, which was a great decision because he was very good at it. He also decided to ask the girl of his dreams out on a date, which she said yes, and made the rest of his year worth living. Throughout all of this his brother, who is also his best friend, knows nothing, as well as his parents and the rest of the town. Once his end is drawing nearer though, he decides to tell people, and doesn't expect some of the outcome that he receives from his decision.
II. Literary Elements-
A. Narrator- First Person - "My plan was to focus my senior year on information I could use after graduation when I set out for Planet Earth from the Pluto that is Trout, Idaho, population 943." p. 1
B. Protagonist- Ben Wolf - He is a small guy that has a blood disease and wants to live the rest of his year in the best way possible. "I'm enough smaller than most of them that we don't reach for the same set of shoulder pads at the same time." p. 12
C. Antagonist- The Disease - The blood disease that Ben has is very aggressive and could kill him within the next year. "We have to get right on it. Otherwise you'll be lucky to have a year." p. 4
D. Setting- "Out of Trout's 943 citizens not one of them is a shrink, or even plays one on TV." This shows that Trout, Idaho is a small town and that the people in it have small town jobs.
E. Conflict- In this book, the conflict is both man vs. self and man vs. nature. This is because Ben is diagnosed with a disease that can kill him, which is nature, but also that he refuses to take treatment, which is him essentially harming himself. Ben also decides not to tell anybody about his disease which leads to more trouble as the reader reads further. This is also man vs. self. "We have to get right on it. Otherwise you'll be lucky to have a year." p.4 "Back in the examination room, Doc unloaded when I told him we weren't going to do anything about this." p. 9
F. Theme- The main idea, or theme of this book, is that life is short and everybody needs to live it to the fullest because a person never knows when his or her time is up. " I walked away understanding I have a rare form of whatever the hell it is and without treatment my chances sucked, but with it they still sucked and somehow I knew my chances aren't about living, they're about living well." p. 13
G. Historical Context- This book signifies that everybody time will be up eventually, but it's what you do with that time that really matters. I think many people throughout history have lived this way, and that is what this book teaches us. "Nope, but Malcom was a pretty interesting guy. Came up the hard way." "Far enough out to get him gunned down by his own people." p. 83
III. Reflection- I did like this book very much because it kept me wanting to finish it throughout its entirety. I think this book would make a great movie because it has a great story line and has many twists and turns throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read. It is a great book and en stows great life lessons. This book did, in a sense, end the way I expected. I do however, wish that in some way he could have lived and been with the girl of his dreams, Dallas.

Deadline 200-316

Ben decided to go see Rudy to see if he could help him out with his drinking, and get him off of the sauce for good. When he arrived, Rudy was still sleeping and Ben woke him up. After telling him to leave, Ben refused, needing to know why he insists on drinking and won't let Ben help him. Rudy then begins to tell Ben about his past. Rudy was molested as a young kid and it really got to him. He began to have fantasies about young boys and didn't know what to do. He then turned to God for help and became a priest. For awhile it helped, but then he ended up molesting a young kid who was very gullable and vulnerable. Rudy kept telling him it was ok and that this was helping him, and the kid didn't think much of it. Rudy realized he was out of control, but it was too late. The young kid killed himself later that year, and Rudy couldn't live with it. He then realized that the only way he could control his urges was by drinking. That's why he became an alcoholic and didn't want to stop. This shocked Ben to no end, and he didn't know what to say. He left, but went back the next day. When he went back he told Rudy that he was going to help him in any way he could because he knows he's not a bad guy and his heart is in the right place. Later that week however, Rudy killed himself. He left a note for Ben, knowing he would be the one to find him, that explained everything.
Ben's disease started to progress some as he was coming closer to the close of the year. He decided that it was time to start telling people. He began with coach, knowing that he could be trusted and wouldn't tell anybody. He then went and told Dallas. Dallas couldn't believe it, and asked what she could do, but also couldn't believe that Ben hadn't told her and she told him to leave. Ben knew it was selfish of him, but also knew he had his reasons. He then told his brother, Cody. After telling him, Cody just wanted to do whatever Ben wanted him too. He took it pretty well, but couldn't believe Ben hadn't told him either. Ben then went and told his parents. His Dad was shocked, but his mom just layed there still. He knew it hit her though, because tears ran down her face and onto the pillow. After that, a few weeks later, Ben his whole class in a heated arguement with one of his teachers. His teacher argued that Ben didn't have enough experience to know about Malcom X and all of his history, but Ben then blurted out that he's not going to have that experience, knowing that this was the right time to tell everyone.
The next day, he came to school and Sooner had died. He had been in a car accident the night before. Seeing everyone grieving, Ben and Cody had to leave. They couldn't handle thinking about Ben's death. After that, Ben went to Sooner's dad's house and asked if he could tell Sooner anything after he was up there. All his dad said was "tell him I'm sorry for breaking his collarbone." Then Ben left.
A week later, Ben's disease had gotten so bad that he could hardly get out of bed. Dallas then stopped by and they told each other they were sorry for being selfish. Dallas then laid down by Ben and he stated, "this is way better than any sex i could ever have."

Harris and Me 101-157

After a long week of hanging, the two boys race down to the river for a dip. After playing around, Harris finds a tick on him. Harris informs him about the 'fever tick' and that they would have to dip the cows. As he watches them get the cattle all together, Harris tells him to make sure to stay clear of the tank. It is filled with creosote, which makes blisters come out of your skin. When they got the first cow to come down the chute,  Louie twists its tail and the cow lands right in the creosote and gets it all over everyone. Immediately they feel the burning sensation but are too busy to do something about it as the cows are coming one after another. Once they got all the cows through, the bull was left. As Harris was too busy still worrying about the cows, the bull charged for him and hit him. At this point Knute runs over and throws Harris over the fence and then smacks the bull right in the head with his arm and sends him to the ground. After Harris wakes up, they realize Knute's arm is broken and that he needs to go to the doctor. When Knute and Claire head for the doctor, they realize that they will be gone for a day or two. So him and Harris take over much of the chores, and he is exhausted after each day. Another Saturday night rolls around, and they head to the movies. Only this time, he meets a girl named Elaine Peterson. He was so shy that not one word came out of his mouth. Finally, Harris came over and told her that he was messed up in the head and so he tried to explain to her that he wasn't. But still, no words came out. He told Harris he'd get him back, and he did. He convinced Harris to pee on the electric fence for some of his "dourty peectures". Sure enough, he did it and felt the effects immediately. He extends the pictures to Harris, but Louie comes in and snatches them from him. Later on, Harris decides to rig up a washing machine motor to a bike. And sure enough, he gets it together. He takes off  and it starts to go faster and faster. Soon, the bike was going so fast that Harris couldn't keep up with the pedaling. Harris yelled for him to come help him, but by then he had crashed into the ditch, parts flying everywhere. After hopelessly looking for his bibs that flew off during the crash, they pick up the motor and head back to the yard. As summer was coming to an end, the boys were playing a game of "Commie japs vs. G.I. Joe". After a while of playing, they noticed a car similar to the one that brought him here. And sure enough, it was. Harris tried convincing him that he didn't have to go, but there was no choice. As he loaded up and was heading down the drive way, Harris stopped the car. The Always War 100-197

Once they realize there is no one around, they start walking around and field. The grass in the field is almost shoulder-high and the dirt is actually rubble from buildings that had been destroyed a long time ago. The three of them head toward an old aircraft radio tower in the distance. They climb up the bird-dropping infested ladder of the tower to get a better look at the surrounding area. All they see is open land, with a grove of trees and a river in the distance. Gideon soon realizes that they should be in Shargo and that the whole city, along with the military headquarters, were destroyed a long time ago. He gets furious as he points out where buildings should be and where underground fuel tanks are at. Once Gideon calms down, they went back to the plane to get parts to make a homemade bowl to get fuel from the fuel tanks to their plane. Once they got enough fuel to make it back out of the war zone, they head back to friendly territory. Just before they reach the boundary, the plane gets taken over by their own military. It lands them at the main headquarters for their military. Uniformed men and women escort them to General Kantoff's office, who is in charge of the entire military. After making small talk for awhile, they get down to business. After General Kantoff listens to what Gideon and Tessa are saying about the war zone, he decides that they are crazy and need to be taken away. Dek knocks out Kantoff with a jar of cigars and they sprint out of the office so no one could catch them. After awhile Tessa sees guards running down other hallways. She questions Gideon about why they are not chasing after them. Gideon then hits the railing and a computer appears out of wall. It shows a map of the entire facility and where the guards are at. In the center of the the building there is a dark area. This is the control room for the military. No one is allowed in this room, as it is all controlled by computers. They decide to head there. Once Gideon distracts the guards by sending them to another part of the building, he punches in a code and they all go into the control room. An automated voice suddenly talks to them and knows all about them. The computer has a mind of its own, as it can choose when to tell lies and when to tell the truth. After arguing with it for a while, Gideon punches through the wall and into the computers circuits. Gideon then grabs a disk drive out of the hole. That piece can tell them what the computer had been thinking the whole time it was talking to them. They then build a makeshift laptop out of more parts out of the wall to use with the drive. Just then, guards barge in and shoot them with tranquilizers. They wake up in a jail cell soon after. Dek and Gideon both laid on the floor, depressed and tired of trying to stay alive. After Tessa argued with them about trying to get our of there, they came up with an idea. Tessa still had the mini laptop in her pocket. They used that to get out and then they went back to the control room. When they went back in, the computer told them that it let the guards catch them to see if the three of them had enough resolve to complete the task. After talking about countless ways to spread the news about the war zone, they come up with something. They are going to broadcast a video of them talking about the war zone and have footage of it to send worldwide, and they did just that. To find out how people reacted to the news, the computer brought up videos of towns. Everyone was in shock. People started breaking through the border fences and walking into the war zone. The war that would go on forever finally ended.

Deadline 100-200

During the game, Cody throws Ben the game winning touchdown. They were down by 6 points with 15 seconds left, and Ben had the safety beat by about two inches. Cody lobbed up the ball and soared it just over the safety's head and into Ben's hands. The crowd went nuts as the players ran off the field and hugged each other. Once they were in the locker room, Cody had scouts that came and talked to him about scholarships to play in college. After he returned, Ben and Cody went back to their house to get ready for the dance. Cody went ahead of Ben, while he went to go pick up Dallas. They then went to the dance and when they walked in the whole dance floor shook with applause and cheering. All of the cheerleaders picked Ben up and he crowd surfed until Dallas grabbed him down. They stayed at the dance for awhile, then went back to Dallas's house. Once they arrived, Dallas told Ben she wanted him to stay overnight, but they weren't going to have sex. Although disheartened by that statement, Ben agreed to stay. Dallas then told him that she had been molested by her uncle when she was younger, and wanted to know if Ben would stay. He said of course he would, and said how sorry he felt for her. The next morning, they woke up and Ben went home. When he arrived, his dad was waiting up and had breakfast made. They talked for awhile, then Ben went to the car wash to talk to Rudy. Although he had been doing well, he got back on the sauce and was out of control. Ben then grabbed the bottle of Jack from him and began yelling at him and said how he better be ready to get fixed when he comes back the next time. After the next week in school, they had their final game before the championship. The stands were packed and wild with screaming, but that didn't help out their team much. After a long hard football game, the team that Ben and Cody had led this far, lost by one touchdown. Football season was now over. Ben was glad they made it that far, but disappointed because he wanted one more game winning catch like the last game. He was happy though, that he got the chance to play in the first place. After the game that night, Ben went over to Dallas's house. She was playing with her little brother when he arrived, and he began playing with him too. Ben has grown to love that little guy. He loves playing with Joe Henry and picking on him. He finds out though, that he isn't Dallas's little brother, he's her son. When Dallas was raped by her uncle, she became pregnant. They then moved away, and moved back once she had him, claiming it was her mother's child. She then asked Ben if that bothered him, and what he thought? He said it didn't bother him at all and that he still wanted to be with her, no matter what. She then said how she hated secrets and that she never wants them to have secrets from eachother. This makes Ben feel horrible. She then asks if he thinks that they have a chance to be together forever. He thinks this is an open window to tell her the truth about what's going on, but he misses that window, and tells her "I sure hope so."

Harris and Me 1-100

An eleven year old city kid, whose parents are alcoholics, gets sent to live with relatives on their family farm. No one is around his age except Harris, the youngest of the Larsons. When he gets there, he meets everyone. Harris starts asking questions about him and his parents. He noticed that everytime Harris cusses or uses inappropriate language, his sister Glennis slaps him up side the head, which happens a lot during the day. Early next morning, Harris wakes him up for breakfast. He is too tired to want to get up but is very hungry. He is also curious who Louie was, there hired man that lives with them. He gets to the table and sees louie, a very old and dirty man. As the pancakes came, Louie jabbed at them with his fork and got them all. He said that he had never seen anything eat like Louie, devouring the pancakes like they were nothing. After breakfast, they head out to the barn and Harris offers him a cigarette. He takes a drag and immediately starts vomiting. As he is still dry-heaving, they go to get the cows. He loses sight of Harris and all of a sudden gets hit directly in the groin and then right in his head and goes out. Turns out it was one of the cows named Vivian. As he gets back on his feet, Harris impatiently tells him they have a lot to do and they head to the barn. When Harris enters the barn, he starts looking for "Ernie", one of the roosters. Ernie jumps on him and they start going at it. Harris asks him if he wants to play war. He thought Harris meant with Ernie, but he meant the pigs. Harris called them "commie japs", something he got from Louie. Using boards as guns, they sneak up on the pigs. All of a sudden, Harris jumps on one of the pigs and starts stabbing it with an imaginary knife. As he does the same, he slips off and lands right in the mud and pig manure. They are so filthy and disgusting that they head down to the river and wash off. After another meal, they go out to mow and he finds out who buzzer is. It was Louie's pet lynx that Harris wanted to stay away from. Sometimes during the day they would look at his collection of comic books. Harris is interested in Tarzan and wants to swing from a rope like he does. He climbs a tree and tells him to hand him a rope. He tests it and then hands it to Harris. Harris yells like Tarzan and starts to swing down. When that happens, Ernie starts to attack him and almost goes right into Harris's path as he is swinging. He grabbed Harris while Ernie was on him still and swung right over the pig pen. Right then, the rope breaks. Without wasting time, Harris jumps right on one of the pigs again. They start talking about playing Cowboys and Indians when Buzzer jumps  on Harris and they start wrestling around. Just then, Claire calls to Harris to wash up. They were going to head into town for a picture show. After the movies, he got tired and went to watch the dancing. He falls asleep and wakes up to Knute carrying him and Harris back to the truck. The next day, Harris leads there horse Bill to the barn and wants to ride it like Gene did in the movie. As they try to swing down, Harris holds on too long and lands on Bill's back side. As he is about to slide off, Bill bucks him off and kicks him right in the stomach.

The Always War 1-100

The whole town of Waterford City is gathered in what used to be the school gym for a ceremony to honor Gideon Thrall. Gideon was a pilot for the United States military in the ever-lasting war that the U.S. has been in. The ceremony is to honor Gideon's courage and bravery with the highest award the military has to offer. This is very special moment for the beat-up town of Waterford City because only six others have received this award in history. Gideon is about to receive the award from the general when, out of nowhere, Gideon says that he doesn't deserve the award and says he is a coward. The whole gym is in shock as he runs out of the room. Tessa, Gideon's neighbor, runs after him to find out why he did such a thing. She found him throwing up in a trashcan and asked why he did what he did. He told her that he did terrible things in the war and shouldn't get a medal for what he did. Once she returned home to her apartment after a long day, Tessa laid in her bed and thought about the days events. After awhile, she heard a tapping on her wall coming from Gideon's room. Tessa figures out that it is Morse code and decodes it. Gideon is saying SOS. The next day she takes flowers over to the Thrall's apartment to give to Gideon, but this was only a diversion so she could get past Gideon's mother. Gideon asks her to bring him a laptop because he can't have one because of what has happened. Once Tessa gives him the laptop, he starts typing in things and bunches of codes pop up on the screen. He tells her she might not want to watch the next thing he does, but she does anyway. It is a video of over 1000 people, women and children included, being killed by a bomb that was dropped on them. He tells her that he is a killer and that is why he doesn't deserve the award. Tessa runs out of the room upset and keeps running out of the apartment building. After running for awhile, she realizes that he watched that video to find something in it and that he still has some hope of change. She heads back to her room to find that someone had been in there. She notices that there had been a hole in the wall and in her floor. Gideon had used her room to escape out of the building. Tessa set out to find Gideon and noticed him walking down the street in a cautious manner. She also notices that someone is following Gideon, so she takes off to follow them and to help Gideon if anything went wrong. They go into an alleyway in a part of town Tessa is unfamiliar with. She hides in what she thinks is a car to listen to what the two people are saying. Then Gideon gets in and starts it up. Tessa suddenly realizes that this isn't a car, as they are going upward towards the sky. It takes awhile for them to land, but once they do, Tessa hears Gideon talking with someone asking them to punish him for what he has done to them. Tessa figures out that they went back to where Gideon flew back to where he killed all those people and was asking them to kill him. She springs up and tackles him and closes the door. Gideon is furious that Tessa had followed him. A screen on the plane's dashboard shows that there is going to be another bombing run through there and they are right in the path of it. They try to get the plane back up and running but Gideon fails to do so, as that that was the first time he had ever flown a plane. All planes were controlled thousands of miles away by computers. The screen shows that the bombers went over but they didn't hear any bombs and didn't die. They were confused as to what happened, when a little girl named Dek appeared from the back of the plane that knew how to fly the plane. Something started hitting the plane, so the girl got the plane started and let Gideon fly it out of there. Soon after, gauges flashed telling them that they were low on fuel and the plane rerouted to Shargo. Shargo is the largest city in the war zone and where the enemy's headquarters are at. Luckily, they crash landed before they got to Shargo. Gideon thought that if he would surrender to the enemy before they killed them, they could possibly survive. When Gideon did so, no one was around to hear him.

Ben however, decides not to do chemo and not to tell his parents about his condition. The doctor insisted over and over that Ben does chemo and talks to his parents, but Ben still decided not to and said he just felt like this was "supposed to happen", but couldn't explain it. Ben then decided that he wanted to do as much as he could with this year that he had left. Instead of doing cross country, he went out for football. He joined his brother Cody, the starting QB, on the team. Ben is 11 months older than Cody, but much smaller, and both are seniors. They have a great relationship, but Ben can't bare to tell Cody about the cancer. The football team then starts practice and the coach, who is like a second father to Ben and Cody, realizes how good Ben actually is for his size. The coach tells Ben that it's going to be really hard not to start him. Ben realizes that he's only been on the team for a few weeks, while others have for a few years, and he wants coach to start the other players instead of him because he feels they deserve it. Ben however, does start on special teams and hits people twice his size, knocking them down almost every time. Ben also got the courage to ask Dallas Suzuki on a date, who he has liked forever, and he was shocked when she said yes. She even asked him to homecoming that night. A week later, after the football game, they went to a dance and then back to Dallas's house. Her parents weren't home and Ben and Dallas went to her room and had sex and Ben could not believe it. He was amazed at how well his life was going, but also saddened that he knew it was all going to have to end. Meanwhile during all of this, he visits a therapist a few times a week in order to talk about things, and she tries to convince him to start chemo. Ben also has dreams where Hey-soos (Jesus) talks to him and gives him advice. The next Friday, is homecoming. Ben actually gets to start this game, because the star running back of the team, Sooner, gets hurt. His dad is an alcoholic and broke Sooner's collarbone. After the first kickoff, Ben flies down the field and hits the reciever at the 20 yard line. He then for the first time, gets to stay on the field because Sooner is hurt.

Paper Towns Response

Book Title: Paper Towns
Author: John Green
Year of Publication: 2008
Number of Pages: 305
AR Points Awarded: 13.0

Literary Elements
Narrator - It is written in first person from Quentin’s point of view. “‘Margo,’ I said, ‘we’re in SeaWorld.’” p. 75
Protagonist - The protagonist is Quentin, who is a slightly nerdy and awkward high school boy who has a huge crush on Margo Roth Spiegelman, who is basically the queen of their school. He is very funny and likable. “I laughed awkwardly, then walked over and knelt by the window, my face inches from hers [Margo’s]. I couldn’t imagine why she was here, in my window, like this.” p. 25
Antagonist - The closest thing to an antagonist is probably Margo. She didn’t intentionally do anything wrong, but in leaving, she became the main problem in this book, because Q became obsessed with finding her. “‘Well,’ she said, ‘it seems that Margo has run away. Again.’ She sighed. ‘This would be -- what is it, Josh, the fourth time?’” p. 101
Setting - Most of the book takes place in Orlando, Florida either at school or at Q or his friends’ houses. Toward the end, it takes place on the road, and in Agloe, New York. “From above, Orlando was pretty well lit. Beneath us I could see the flashing DON’T WALK signs at intersections, and the street-lights running up and down the city in a perfect grid until downtown ended and the winding streets and cul-de-sacs of Orlando’s infinite suburb started.” p. 56
Conflict - The conflict is kind of man v. man, with Q against Margo, but Q’s not really fighting against Margo. He’s more fighting against everyone who tells him that he can’t find Margo, or that he should give it up. He had to fight against his perceptions of Margo in order to find her. “Margo Roth Spiegelman was a person, too...someone who--because no one thought she was a person--had no one to really talk to.” p. 199
Theme - The theme of this book is about growing up and finding yourself. Quentin and Margo both grow up a lot over the course of the book. It’s fun to be a kid, but it’s important to mature sometime and realize what life is about and to accept others for who they are. “‘...each of us starts out as a watertight vessel. And these things happen--these people leave us, or don’t love us, or don’t get us, or we don’t get them, and we lose and fail and hurt one another. And the vessel starts to crack open in places...But there is all this time between when the cracks open up and when we finally fall apart. And it’s only in that time that we can see one another, because we see out of ourselves through our cracks and into others through theirs.’” p. 302
Historical Context - This book makes reference to Walt Whitman a lot, especially his poem “Song of Myself” from Leaves of Grass. “It was the Penguin Classics version of the first edition of Leaves of Grass....There were several quotes highlighted in blue, all from the epically long poem known as ‘Song of Myself.’” p. 115-116

Reflection
I really enjoyed Paper Towns. It was very intriguing and unpredictable. I liked how the author made the characters change and grow throughout the book, and it was fun to see the change in them. I probably identified with Margo most. She kind of puts on a front, but she wants someone to figure out the real her and know that she’s not so happy and bubbly on the inside constantly. She’s just a regular girl. It didn’t remind me of any other book I’ve ever read. It was very unique, and that is part of what I liked about it. It would make a good movie because the characters are likable, and there is a lot of fun action. I would recommend this book to anyone. It didn’t end the way I expected. I expected Q and Margo to end up together. However, I like the author’s ending better than the way I expected it to end.

Paper Towns 201-305

Q continues to search the abandoned subdivisions for Margo, and he continues to have no luck. Lacey Pemberton, one of Margo’s friends, starts to date Ben and kind of begins hanging out with Ben, Radar, and Q. They find a map in the abandoned building that Margo used to hang out in, and it has thumb-tack holes in it. They think it might be some sort of a route that Margo is on. A few days after that was Q’s birthday. His parents got him a minivan, so he wasn’t super excited about that, but he was glad that he at least had a car. When Q was browsing the Internet, looking for clues about where Margo may be, he came up with a new definition for “paper towns.” They are towns that do not actually exist, but they are put on maps as copyright traps for other mapmakers. He found a post on the website by Margo that said she was going to be in the paper town of Agloe, New York until May 29 at noon. When he finds this, it’s already May 28. Knowing they have less than 24 hours to go on a 23 hour drive, Q, Ben, Radar, and Lacey skip graduation to head to Agloe in Q’s minivan. It’s a very eventful trip, including a lot of energy drinks, very few stops, and a cow in the middle of the road that nearly totals Q’s van. The finally got to Agloe, and find Margo in an old abandoned barn. She’s not very nice when they first get there. She’s very surprised and says that she didn’t want to be found. She just wanted to run away. Q and Margo talk for a while, and she says that she can’t go back to Orlando. She’s going to New York City to live for a while, and then she could go anywhere from there. She said she went to Agloe in the first place because she felt like she was never real. She always just felt like she was conforming to other people’s ideas of her. Margo and Q have sort of a romantic connection, but both of them also realize that they aren’t really meant for each other. He’s going to go back to Orlando, and she’ll probably just keep running from place to place her entire life, but they both realize they’re okay with that because they can’t just change who they are.
