Jacob Jankowski is an old man in a nursing home. When he was younger, he worked for the circus, and this book is basically a flashback from that time. Jacob went to an Ivy League college to get a degree in veterinary sciences. However, his parents died shortly before his final exam. His parents had mortgaged the farm, so he didn’t get anything at all in inheritance. He got to the final exam, and he just couldn’t focus at all. He left the room without having filled out a single answer. He ran away and jumped on a train to try to escape. When he got on the train, a man on the train almost threw him out. However, Camel, another man on the train, rescued him and told him that he was on a circus train, The Benzini Brothers’ Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Jacob got a job with the circus as the main veterinarian on the show. His first task is to take care of the main horse in the show, Silver Star. Marlena, the girl who performs on the horses, is devastated to find out that Silver Star cannot be healed. Jacob is kind of under the commands of August, Marlena’s husband. Jacob unintentionally tells August what to do one time, so August almost feeds him to the lions. August can be very temperamental and moody.

The team won the homecoming football game with a last-second pass caught by Ben. They go to the Homecoming dance and Ben has the best night ever dancing with Dallas. That night, Ben stays at Dallas’s house, and she tells him that her uncle raped her when she was 13. She’s afraid that she’s “ruined” and then Ben won’t like her anymore, but he tells her he’s not going anywhere because of that. He really wants to tell Dallas about his medical condition, but he doesn’t want her to think any differently of him or to dump him. Ben continues to chat with Hey-Soos, and he also develops an infatuation for Malcolm X. For one of their school projects, he decides to try to get one of their town streets named after Malcolm X. Everyone else thinks it’s a stupid idea because their town, like Chambers, is pretty much all Caucasian, but Malcolm is somewhat of a hero to Ben. Ben also makes friends with Rudy, former Catholic priest turned town drunk because he has a love for Malcolm X too. He notices that Dallas is so good with her little brother, Joe Henry, and that makes him even more attracted to her. However, a few pages later, Dallas tells him that Joe Henry is actually her son, not her brother. She had him when she was 13 after her uncle raped her. The football team ended up losing the game that would’ve taken them to the state finals, so football season is over now.

Marcelo In the Real World 301-312
Marcelo ends up having to go to public high school. He knew that this was probably a consequence of helping Ixtel. He gives his dad the note that Wendell gave him. His dad says that what happened, happened, but he regrets it. Marcelo confronts Jasmine about it, and she regrets it also. Marcelo decides that when he grows up, he wants to move to Vermont and live with Amos. He wants to raise ponies and use them for therapy for other autistic kids.
Marcelo In the Real World 201-300
Marcelo discovers from Robert Steely, another man that works at the firm, that he hasn’t seen all of the information relating to the Vidromek case. Marcelo sets out to find the last pieces of information in the case, hoping this can help him save Ixtel. Jasmine found the last piece of information. It is a document that says that Vidromek knew that the windshields they were making were defective, but they continued to make them anyway. This piece of information could help Ixtel to win the case, which would mean Arturo would lose the case. If Arturo loses the case, they could lose Vidromek as their client, and could lose all of their business. Hundreds and hundreds of people could lose their jobs, including Jasmine. Jasmine asks Marcelo to come with her to visit her home in Vermont. She thinks it will help him to clear his head and figure out what he wants to do with the document. They meet Jasmine’s dad, Amos. He’s kind of an old hillbilly. After spending a day at Amos’s house, they go to camp near a lake. Marcelo and Jasmine sleep under the stars together, and he begins to realize that he has feelings for Jasmine. Marcelo realizes that he definitely wants to give the documents to Ixtel’s lawyer to help her. He also tells Wendell that he will not help him “get” Jasmine. He likes Jasmine too much, and respects her, and he would never put her in that position. Wendell, in return, gives him a letter that he found that is to Arturo, from Jasmine. The letter says that Jasmine and Arturo had an affair. Marcelo can’t believe that Jasmine would do this, and he can’t believe that his dad would do this. He goes to visit Ixtel and meet the person he helped. With Marcelo’s help, Ixtel is able to get reconstructive surgery on her face.
