Outpost 31-130
Deuce went and visited Longshot at the wall to talk to him and see if she could help at some time during the day. Longshot told her that she would possibly be able to, but she would have to prove herself, not only to him, but to the other guards. He told her that she would have to wait until the growing season, and she could go out on patrols with the growers and protect them. She then decided to go and ask Fade to see if he wanted to join her and Stalker on the patrols. When she arrived, he was grooming an animal and was surprised to see her. She was extremely happy that she was able to be with him and ask him to join the patrols. After talking to him for a little while, she finally asked and Fade said yes. This excited her more than anything had since she had been in Salvation, she knew that she wanted to be with Fade. She could never stop thinking about him. The next week, Deuce went to prove herself with Fade and Stalker at her side. Fade still didn't want to talk to Stalker because of the past, but he tolerated him just enough to be able to be with Deuce. When they arrived, they talked to Longshot and he decided he would give her a chance to prove herself against another guard. Deuce then picked out a guard that was laughing because he didn't think a girl could beat any guy. To his surprise however, Deuce had him on the ground in a matter of seconds. She was then worthy of going with the growers and protecting them. After that, Stalker had left and she asked Fade if he had to leave right away. He said that he could probably stay around for awhile, and this made Deuce glow with happiness. They then walked to her house and went around back and sat on the swing set. Deuce knew something had been wrong with Fade since they arrived at Salvation, and finally worked up the courage to ask. The whole time Fade had thought that her and Stalker were "together" because they had been spending so much time together, and this made him very upset. Deuce then explained to him that they were only friends and that she never felt the way about Stalker that she had felt for Fade. They then kissed and were both amazed. Neither one of them wanted to pull away, but Deuce finally did and they were both shaking with excitement. Fade then told Deuce that he wanted it to be known that they were together. Deuce was fine with this, and gave Fade exclusive "kissing rights" that no one else could have. After Fade left, Deuce went inside and went to bed. She felt that beings her and Fade were now together, that she should lock her window so stalker could not get in. She knew this would disappoint him, but she didn't want to give him the wrong impression, and was afraid she already had. The next week, they went out on patrol. It felt amazing for Deuce that she could fight side by side with Fade again. It had been so long since she had actually fought that she was getting tired as the Freaks attacked. She was afraid that she was getting soft, and knew that she had to train more. Especially with the way the Freaks attacked. Longshot said there were more in this one patrol than there usually are the whole time during the growing season. They had lost 4 guards and 2 growers in the attack, but pressed on to plant the seed, and then returned home. When they got back, Momma Oaks and her husband, Edmund, were there to see if Deuce was ok. Deuce felt bad though that no one was there for Fade, so she invited him over for supper. He then came over and ate with them and they talked for awhile, talking about his family that he had before the enclave and Salvation, and both his and Deuce's past. After Momma Oaks and Edmund went to bed, Fade stayed for awhile longer talking to Deuce. After he left, Deuce went to bed, but left her window unlocked, feeling that she owed Stalker and explanation. Beings he really liked Deuce, he was saddened by the news that she didn't want him like she wanted Fade. He told her that she was going to break Fade because he was softer than both her and Stalker. At first Deuce thought this wasn't going to happen, but then it scared her a bit and she second guessed herself. The next week, they went out on another patrol. Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

The Postmistress 234-333
When Dr. Fitch died, Frankie found a letter on him that he was intending to send to Emma, and she felt it was her duty to make sure it got to Emma. Frankie started to become too emotionally exhausted by her job. She couldn’t handle hearing all the people’s stories and then not knowing how she ended. So, she went to the United States to Franklin, Massachusetts. Some of the people there know her from her radio shows. She plays some of the tapes she recorded for one man, and he even hears his wife’s voice on it to know that she’s alive. Frankie meets Iris, Emma, Harry, and the other people of the town. When she meets Emma, she knows she should relay the letter, but for some reason, she can’t. She just gets nervous every time she thinks about it. Emma’s about eight months pregnant now, and she still hopes and prays that her husband is alive even though she hasn’t heard from him in months, and Frankie doesn’t want to ruin that hope. Iris feels the same way. She received a letter telling Emma that her husband had died, but she never delivers it to Emma.
The Eleventh Plague 1-10
Stephen sat there staring at his Grandpas dead body as his dad dug a hole to bury him. Many feelings overcame him remembering how his grandpa was. He was strict and would slap him if he did anything wrong and taught him everything he needed to know. Finally they dug the whole and Stephen and his dad started lowering him into the hole debating whether or not to take his gold Marine Corp ring. They buried him and left his ring on him. They woke up the next morning and got everything ready and moved out toward a place that was not defined. Stephen reads his Lord of the Rings book that he found in a ruined walmart. His dad tells him about the war that had started because some American students got captured in a place they should not of been and since there was so many other problems that was finally the clicking thing to the destruction in America now.

Outpost 230-320
As time went on at the outpost outside of Salvation, many things progressed as the growing season went on and Deuce was starting to feel apart of the guards and was feeling full of purpose. The threat of the Freak village still lingered throughout Deuce, Fade, Stalker, and Longshot's head but he decided to wait it out and see what happens. Just as it seems everything is going perfect, disaster strikes the camp. One morning they wake up and get ready for the day and Deuce notices that Fade is nowhere to be found. She shrugs it off thinking he must be talking to someone or doing some business then a hour goes by and she starts to get worried. She goes into his and Frank Wilson's tent and nobody is present. All their things are scattered about and her heart sunk when she saw on the sheets of his bed blood. Fade and Frank where knocked unconscious and taken away to the Freak village. She rushes to Longshot telling him the news he is very upset by it but does not have the men to spare to send out. He tells Deuce that if she assembled a team she can go, so she talks to everyone in the camp and manages to get Stalker, Ellis, and Gary Miles. Gary Miles was the man who gave her the creeps and was sure that he wanted to harm her but she needed all the help she can get. Stalker used his honed tracking skills to figure out where they went from the tent. He picks up a trail and they start off into the woods. They follow it for a long time into the woods and they start coming across the warning signs they saw before. They are for sure they are nearing the freak village. They are jumped by freaks and Stalker and Ellis fight them off, but Gary Miles takes Deuce far away from the fight. The perfect time to hurt her when she was not ready. She had her on the ground with his gun pointed at her telling her all the things he was going to do to her. Not knowing that Deuce was a much better fighter than him, she was not worried. When he put his gun down she kicked the back of his knee out breaking it then putting a knife into his chest killing him. She returns to Stalker who was wounded trying to find her. They lost Ellis in the fight but decided to carry on. They made it outside the freak village and they where all sleeping. She decided to sneak into the village and Stalker would stay up on the hill and watch. She made it their and found Fade battered and beaten the worst she has ever seen. He screamed when she touched him and the freaks started to wake. She told him that he has to get up and run and cut him lose they both ran away from the freaks and got away. They walked far enough away and made a fire and tended to Fade's wounds she tried to comfort him but he would not let her he did not want her to touch him and this made Deuce feel very sad. They make it back and Fade and Stalker go back to the town for medical attention. She thought being away and healing Fade would feel better. Then one day out on the field the freaks assembled in a huge mass and attacked. They retreated back to the outpost fighting many off as they could and in the process Longshot gave his life protecting the others into the outpost. Devastated Deuce and the two other survivors go back into Salvation and the mass of freaks lingered outside waiting. She goes to see Fade and he is still very distant and wants Deuce to leave him alone. Heartbroken she continues on and goes to Bigwater the mayor of the town and tells him of the threat. He tells Deuce that Longshot made a will and gave Deuce his old house with all of his belongings. She goes in and finds the maps of all of his trade routes he used to run and decided she needed help from another settlement. She gives Fade the house so he can be alone and he is thankful. She goes to Bigwater explaining that she needs to go find help from another settlement so they can help with the freak problem and he agrees seeing how bad it has got. She then goes and says goodbye to everyone. Little does she know when she tells Stalker and Tegan goodbye they joined her. Last she went to say goodbye to Fade he asks her if she is still his partner and she says yes and he then wants to go with her too. With the team together they head to Bigwaters and they get all of their gear. He shows them the secret underground tunnel to the outside of Salvation and they enter it to start their journey to look for another settlement for help. The future of Salvation lay in their hands.

Outpost 1-30
Deuce is living in Salvation and attending school with all of the other kids in the settlement. She is still living with Mrs. Oaks, but Tegan, Fade, and Stalker are living with other people. Tegan is living with Doc and helps him with surgery, cleaning tools and what not. Fade is living with a rancher and helps him take care of animals. Stalker is living with a blacksmith and helps him make weapons and ammo out of metal. They all attend school during the day, and help out the people they live with afterwards. Deuce and Stalker sneak out of the house at night and practice their fighting moves because they aren't permitted to do them within Salvation. One night, they sneaked out and went up to the wall and helped Longshot look for Freaks. There were about ten of them out there during the time they were there, trying to draw Longshot and other guards away from the wall. Two of the Freaks then crept up and Longshot shot one of them, and the other one looked up at him with a sad look in his eyes. Deuce always knew how they looked when one was shot, but she saw a different look in the Freak's eyes, a look of sadness. Duece and Stalker then went back to their homes and went to bed. The next day, they went to school. Deuce and Stalker mostly just spend time together because Fade and Tegan don't pay much attention to them. The only time Fade talks to Deuce is when other kids are making fun of her for being different, but then Deuce just walks away, not knowing what to say to Fade. She just thinks that he's happy with the way his life is now. As for Tegan, she waves at Deuce, but they haven't talked much. During school, Deuce can't concentrate much, always thinking about the enclave where she had come from. All she wants is for school to be out, which it will be in a couple weeks. After school, Deuce went home and asked Momma Oaks if she could go visit Tegan. Momma Oaks said she could so she headed to the doctor's office. When she arrived she saw Tegan was there, and went in to talk to her. She talked to her for awhile, and found out that Tegan was happier with other people than with Deuce because Deuce reminded her of the past, which she did not want to remember. Although this hurt Deuce dearly, she knew that it would just take time, and that if it made Deuce happy, she would have to keep her distance for awhile.

The Postmistress 134-233
Iris and Harry took their relationship a step further and slept with each other. He starts watching the ocean for a German invasion. She continues to deliver the post, and part of this job includes receiving telegrams. Emma is nervous for every telegram because she’s really nervous about her husband.
Emma continues to go to the post office to visit Iris often. She is constantly nervous that her husband is going to die. She writes a letter to him every single day and receives a letter from him every day as well. She knows as long as that is going on, he is okay.
Frankie continues to report the news from overseas. She met a very nice man from America one night when hiding out from a bomb. She sort of liked him, and they left the shelter together, and he got hit by a taxi and died instantly. The reader learns that this man is Emma’s husband, Dr. Will Fitch. She then gets a new assignment from her boss to figure out who is fleeing Germany, and why, and that will be her next news story. She goes to the train station and boards a train and begins interviewing everyone about why they’re leaving Germany. Many of them are going to America or other countries to get away from hard times. One specific man left because he was a Jew, and he was going to get persecuted for that. Frankie begins growing really close with a lot of these people and stories, and she has a hard time keeping her news reports strictly “news” and free of emotion.

The Eleventh Plague 207-278
After knowing that everybody in Settler's Landing was going to fight the people of Fort Leonard, Stephen and Jenny decided to leave for awhile and try to decide what they wanted to do. Violet then came and found them in an old abandoned casino and told them that she wanted them to come back with her even if it was just for a little while. When they went back, Stephen and Jenny went into the woods back behind the house, hoping not to be seen by the others of Settler's Landing. As they did, they noticed that their were some people camped out back there that they had never seen before. At first, they thought they were people from Fort Leonard or ex-military. Thinking this, they went back to Marcus and Violet's and at dinner with them. At the dinner table Stephen decided to talk to them about it and tell them what him and Jenny saw. When Stephen told them about the people, they didn't seem surprised. Stephen then realized that the Henry's had hired them, and also that they weren't ex-military, they were slavers. The Henry's were going to sell all of the people of Fort Leonard to the slavers and possibly even the people of Settler's Landing. Stephen and Jenny then decided to take things into their own hands. They sneaked over to the slaver's camp and plotted what to do. Seeing some grenades hanging by a jeep, they both got an idea. While Jenny distracted them, Stephen was going to go for the grenades. As she did this, Stephen realized he had a very short time before the slavers would go after her and possibly kill her. He ran and grabbed the grenades as Jenny was running into the middle of the camp distracting most of the slavers. One slaver however, wasn't distracted and started chasing Stephen with his jeep. Stephen then recognized the slaver, it was the same one that had run him and his did out of the plane and had almost killed them. Although Stephen froze for a moment, he thought quickly and pulled a pin out a grenade and threw it in the camp, blowing up most of the slavers small camp. As Jenny and Stephen out maneuvered the slavers, they ran into Jackson. As they did, they kept running until they came to the rest of the people of Settler's Landing who were fighting off many slavers. Jenny, Jackson, and Stephen decided to help out and kill as many as they could. Stephen then went after the one he knew who was on the back of a jeep on a machine gun turret. He ran at him and speared him, recieving a blow to the stomach. Somehow, Stephen got on top of the slaver and started to choke him, but he wasn't going to give up quickly. He then wrapped his hands around Stephen's neck and Stephen slowly drifted away. He awoke to the feeling of being dragged on his back. He didn't know who it was at first, but then realized it was Jackson. Jackson had killed the slaver and saved Stephen. They then realized that all of the people of Settler's Landing had killed all of the slavers, but were fighting fires that had started. Stephen, Jackson, and Jenny started running to help, but were then stopped by people of Fort Leonard who were armed and ready to kill. Stephen however talked to them and stalled them until people from Settler's Landing came to back them up. When they arrived, led by Marcus, they all agreed to put their weapons down. They then talked it out and told them exactly what had happened. After they talked it out, the people of Fort Leonard decided to help the people of Settler's Landing put out the fires. Stephen, Jackson, and Jenny turned towards Settler's Landing and began walking, hoping that their would be a place left for them to live.

Outpost 130-230
They make it out to the field and begin their guard duty for the very
long summer ahead. They prepare for the long haul by setting up a mini
camp and cooking food and setting up guard duties. They plan to build a
more stable set up so they will not be exposed as bad over time. Over
the next days they escort the growers to the fields and guard them as
they plant seeds and get everything ready. Tegan assists the growers in
tending the crops because she wanted to do her part in this as much as
she could. Some of the guards where out knocking trees down and making
them into lumber to build their fort. They do not see a lot of signs of
freak activity around them. They guess that the freaks are just waiting
and watching to see what they can do to throw them off. Deuce does not
like this new freak behavior she has been seeing lately its not like the
ones she had seen down below. The new ones seem to think that people
are the monsters and are doing what the people are doing just trying to
protect themselves and rid them from the area for safety. They go some
nights and with no disturbances happening around them. Then one night
while two guys where on guard Deuce awakens to a noise and sees a lone
thing run off with a stick from the fire into the woods with it. She
believes it was a freak that got it which chilled her to the bone. Fade
and Deuce then decide to go into the wilderness farther to see what the
freaks are up to. With the okay from Longshot they head out into the
woods. They trudge a long ways into it and start to run into bones
hanging from trees like windchimes. A way the freaks warned people they
were coming into their territory. Then Deuce, Fade, and Stalker stumble
upon something that they have never seen or ever wanted to see in their
lives. A freak village full of them strong in numbers and had small
freaks wandering around through out the village. With this startling new
discovery they head back to the camp to tell Longshot of the news about
the village. When they return the new Fort of theirs is almost
complete. They tell Longshot and he is just as troubled about the news
as they where. He decides to leave it be and see what happens since he
does not have the man power to go in their and try to kill all of them.
Deuce and Fade get a little leave together and get to go back home for a
day. When they return the visit Mama Oaks and Edmund and they were
happy to see them. The town of Salvation was having a celebration that
night and there was going to be a dance and Fade and Deuce decided they
would attend this dance. They dress up all nice and go out to it and
slow dance for a little while. The fade takes her to a abandoned house
where Stalker and Deuce used to train at night when nobody was around
they talk, cuddle, and kiss then decide to get some rest. They sleep
there for the night and gather supplies to go back out in the morning.
They return to the camp outside of Salvation to continue their guarding
duties. She gets some trouble from one of the guards there but he is
threatened to be killed by Fade and backs down. She can not help but
feel creeped out by this guy and thinks he will try anything to get what
he wants.

The Postmistress 43-133
Frankie is still over in London broadcasting radio news about the war. The building she was living in was hit by a bomb, and her friend, roommate, and fellow journalist, Harriet, was killed. Her news stories get kind of deep and personal, but her boss encourages her to keep them strictly news. However, she wants to broadcast about real people. She wants to interview people and tell real stories. She also wants to investigate what’s happening to the Jews. All the people and headlines insist that nothing serious is going on, but Frankie knows they are all being relocated, and denied rights, and she wants to figure out what’s happening.
Emma listens to Frankie’s broadcasts regularly, and she wants to help with the war effort, but she doesn’t know how to. Her husband, Dr. Fitch, goes to help deliver a baby. However, the mother of the baby dies during child birth, and Dr. Fitch feels like it is his fault. He wants to go join the fight overseas to feel like he’s doing something useful with his life. This really upsets Emma, but she doesn’t really argue with him, as she had just told him a few weeks before that she wanted to help with the war effort too.
Iris also listens to Frankie’s broadcasts, but she doesn’t really like them. She thinks Frankie is too arrogant. One day when Iris was working in the post office, Harry Vale came in to see her and brought her a gift. A few weeks later, they were at the movies together, he walked her home, and they kissed. Iris really likes him and he likes her too.

Eleventh Plague 107-206
The next day, Stephen decided to go help Marcus pick vegetables in return for letting him and his father stay at their house. During his lunch break, instead of eating, Stephen decided to go and explore the town. He came upon the school that all of the children attended. Marcus and Violet's son, Jackson went there as well as their daughter Jenny. Jenny however, didn't attend very often because she didn't get along with a lot of the other kids beings she was Chinese and they all thought she was a spy, even though Marcus and Violet adopted her when she was very little. After Stephen had explored, he returned to work and worked the rest of the day. The next day, Jackson suggested that Stephen should go to school with him, and Stephen did. After school they went to the park and played baseball. Stephen didn't play at first, but Jackson and his friends eventually talked him into it and got him to play. Stephen ended up doing really well and enjoyed playing with Jackson and his friends. They then went down to the quarry with many other people and went for a swim. When they returned back home, Stephen began to realize how much these people actually did care, and how he liked being there with him. He remembered how he had taken medicine from Violet the night before and hid it out in the woods, so his Dad and him would have something to trade when his Dad got better, and he felt bad about it. The next day at school, Jenny decided to show up and passed a note to Stephen. It said "I saw what you did last night. Your a bad boy Stephen." He couldn't believe what he was reading, and he just froze, not knowing what to write back. After school that day, he went up to talk to Jenny as she was sitting at the top of the hill drawing her notepad. As he went up to talk to her, Will Henry came up and started claiming that they were spies and that he wanted them kicked out. Will began to push Jenny around, which angered Stephen so he lunged at will with his knife in hand. He hit will, but lost the knife in the process and it fell to the ground. Will then hit Stephen and knocked him on the ground, knocking the wind out of him. After a few more times going around, Stephen ended up on the ground, waking up to the teacher coming up the hill with Will yelling, claiming how Stephen started the fight. This made the teacher upset, but most of all made Jackson not want to speak to Stephen. He tried to explain to Jackson, but Jackson wouldn't listen. That night Stephen made his way out of the house, planning not to return, knowing Violet would take care of his Dad. Stephen made his way out into the woods, finding an old barn where Jenny stays when she gets angry. He went in and saw Jenny and talked to her, explaining what he was doing. The talking led to kissing, and before he knew it, he had woken up in the middle of the night with Jenny's arms around him. After laying there for awhile, Jenny woke up as well and they decided to pull a prank on the Henry's. Jenny had some fireworks and they went to the Henry's house and lit them off while letting all of their animals out of their corrals. Not wanting to get caught, Stephen yelled, "Fort Leonard forever!", which was a civilization not too far away from Settler's Landing that they didn't want anything to do with. The next day Stephen decided to return to Violet and Marcus's house to see his dad one last time. When he did this, he noticed that the house was empty and sensed that something was wrong. He began to walk around town and realized everyone was gathered in the church. He cracked opened a window and listened in on the conversation. All he heard was that they were planning to attack Fort Leonard that night, killing anybody and everybody in sight. After the meeting adjourned, Stephen yelled at Marcus and explained to him what happened, but he said it was too late. They had went to Fort Leonard the night before and killed a few guards and lit the supply house on fire. They knew that after they did that their was not turning back, and they had to kill them all in order to keep the peace.

Outpost 30-130
After spending yet more time in school and at home Deuce longs for the freedom she once used to have. She learns that she can go out on summer patrols with the guards and help protect the farmers during the planting season. This excites her to end and makes her feel like she has a chance of having a purpose in Salvation after all. She finally mustered up the courage to go tell Fade about the patrols. She went up to him and told him and he was interested in doing it. He told her that he was still her partner and that he would be glad to go out and do them with her. This made her very happy and excited about it. She trains getting ready to show off her skill to Longshot so she is accepted into the group and worthy of going out on patrols with them. She also wants to find out what is wrong with Fade so she confronts him on the subject. He tells her that he thought she was interested in Stalker since they spent so much time together out in the field and in Salvation. Fade thought he had lost her so this made him very upset and distant. Deuce then explains how they were just training that she still really liked him and that she does not want that to change. Fade then takes her hand and they go to the swing behind Deuces house and sit together and hold hands. They exchange kisses and feel like everything is back to normal. Fade introduces the idea of them becoming boyfriend and girlfriend and Deuce likes the idea because she only likes Fade. She then locks her windows so Stalker could not come in anymore and stopped training with him. She tells him later and this upsets him a lot but still wants to go out on summer patrols with them. They train and continue on with Salvation life. Then the day comes where Deuce needed to prove herself and she called out one of the guards. She brings him down with ease and everybody watched astonished with what they just saw. She is accepted and is in need of more people to be in her squad so Fade and Stalker step up plus some guards. They go out on their first patrol and are ambushed by freaks they lose a couple guards and get back to Salvation. The freaks seem to be getting a lot smarter and this worries everybody because they have never seen them act like this before. The next time they go out to protect some farmers plant their crops. Everything is quiet while they do it and they return back to Salvation. Days later they go out again to go check on them and all of the crops have been dug up by the freaks and victims of the freaks where decapitated and their heads where mounted on sticks in the ground. This horrid sight scares everybody and a town meeting is called. They go out yet again to replant the crops and are overrun by more freaks they get back to the gate running from them and are ambushed again at the gate by freaks that have camouflaged themselves in the grass around the gate. They fight their way in and are greeted by all the town folks. They now see that the freaks are very different than what they are used to and the need of guards to be posted outside of the walls at all times would be necessary. Deuce and all of her friends wanted to be apart of the permanent patrols and were not scared to do so. Deuce invites Fade to sleep at her house the last night in Salvation because she learns his caretaker was whipping him. They fall asleep together on the couch and awaken ready to head out on the first of many days out on the field. That may have been the last alone time her and Fade get for a very long time.

The Postmistress 1-42
The book starts in the present tense with people talking about what a disaster it would've been if a postmistress would've just kept letters instead of delivering them back before technology such as cell phones and computers was around. This lady brings it up at a dinner party, and all the guests kind of laugh at the idea. However, when she says that this actually happened, all the dinner guests are appalled. It foreshadows that that's what the book is going to be about. There are three main characters so far: Emma, Frankie, and Iris. Emma is moving to a new town with her new doctor husband. She seems very innocent and girlish. Frankie broadcasts stories about the war from London where it is taking place. She seems very tough. Iris is the postmistress of their town. All of them are affected by the war taking place overseas.

The Eleventh Plague 6-106
Stephen and his Dad started heading back onto the trail, looking for items to trade. As they walked, they salvaged anything they could, throwing it into their cart being pulled by their donkey. After they had been walking for awhile, they saw what looked like a big airplane along the trail. Stephen's dad took his binoculars and looked at it trying to verify what it was. He realized it was a plane that had crashed during the war. They began heading towards it, hoping to find some salvageable goods that they could trade. When they arrived at the plane, they began to search it. They noticed that it had been gone through before, and didn't figure their was much left to take. However, many of the doors in the plane had been rusted shut and were unopened. Stephen and his dad tried a few of them, but could not get any besides one. When they opened it, they found something Stephen had never seen before, and his dad hadn't seen for years. It was a giant, unopened, can of pears. At the sight of this, they both knew they should trade it for something more useful, but couldn't help themselves. They opened it and stuffed their faces, leaving nothing behind. Once they were finished they realized it had began to rain. They figured they could take shelter in the plane for awhile, but then heard a jeep pulling up outside. Stephen peered out of the plane and knew what they were right away, slavers. Their was two men and they had a woman and child tied up that they were going to sell. Stephen and his dad hid in the very back of the plane, knowing that the slavers were going to take shelter there. Once the slavers came in the plane, they didn't look around much so they didn't see Stephen and his dad. The slavers then built a fire and started drinking. Once they were passed out, Stephen and his dad began to sneak out, but were stopped when feeling guilty about the mother and child. When they reached the mother and child, Stephens dad began to release them and snuck the keys away from one of the slavers. Just as he grabbed them, he threw them to the mother as the slaver woke up. Stephen and his dad managed to fight off the slavers and escaped in the pouring rain, running as fast as they could while being chased. After running for a long time, they reached a cliff that held a river down below. Right as they turned around and began to walk the other way, the ground beneath Stephen's dad disappeared and he fell into the river. Stephen then jumped racing after him, trying to catch him in the icy cold water. Once he finally did, he drug him to shore and took shelter underneath a rock face. Stephen's dad was knocked unconscious and in a coma. He also had a broken leg and possibly a broken arm. Trying to do all he could, Stephen started a fire and dried their clothes, trying to keep his dad warm. He then took the rifle his dad had and cleaned it up, while searching for more wood. As he was searching, he noticed their were four people surrounding his dad by the fire. He thought they were slavers, and fired a round that grazed one of the guys surrounding his dad. He then fired a few more shots trying to scare them off, which worked, but then Stephen was hit in the head by the butt of a gun getting knocked out. When he awoke, he tied up riding in the back of a wagon with his dad next to him. He realized that the men weren't slavers, but were salvagers like him and his dad. Stephen didn't say much to them, but they knew he wouldn't hurt them so they untied him, giving him the option to stay with them or go on his own. Beings Stephen was brought up to trust no one, he decided to go on his own. After this though, as they were pulling away, he realized he couldn't help his dad by himself and that he needed help. He then told them that he wanted to go with them, and he hopped back on the wagon, keeping a close eye on his dad, still not trusting the men. After a few hours, they approached something that Stephen had never seen before. It was a little town called Settler's Landing that was full of houses that looked new and weren't wrecked or destroyed. When they pulled into the town, Stephen and his dad were taken into one of the men's, Marcus's, house. His wife, Violet, is a doctor and started to take care of Stephen's dad. Stephen still doesn't trust them, not knowing how nice they are and that they are really just trying to help.

Between Shades of Gray 241-336
Lina, Jonas, and their mother find out that they are for sure on the list and that they're going to be taken away. Before they leave, Lina says goodbye to Andrius and he gives her a stone and tells her to keep it and think of him when she looks at it. He also tells her that he will find her soon so they can be together. When Lina and her family leaves, all Lina wants to to do is find her Papa and be with Andrius. Once they leave, they are taken in trucks and not told where they are going. People in the truck claim that they think they are being taken to America. After riding in the trucks for weeks, they finally stop at a harbor. Everybody is singing and joyful when they see an American ship docked at the bay. The ship however started to pull away, and one of the officers began to laugh at all of the people because they thought they were going to America. Disheartened they all load back into the trucks and start to drive away again. After a few weeks the trucks stopped again, but this time for good. All of the prisoners were loaded onto ships and sailed off to a vast island of nothingness. All of the people were told by the officers that they had to build a quarters for the officers using supplies, but had to build their own huts using anything else they could find on the island. They had to build their huts out of logs, twigs, and rocks using moss to connect everything together. They also realized they had to work very fast because winter was about to set in. After a few weeks, they had gotten everything built, but knew they wouldn't survive through the winter unless they could figure out a way to stay warm. Soon after they had gotten everything built, an American ship sailed to the island and gave everybody hope. The NKVD officers however, made everybody hide in their huts to make the Americans think it was just a military fort for the officers. After about five hours, the ship sailed away leaving supplies for the officers. The officers made all of the prisoners carry the supplies, but did not give them anything in return. A week later, winter set in. Everybody began to freeze and became sick. Luckily, Jonas found an old barrel that washed ashore and fashioned a makeshift stove out of it. Although they had to walk far into the island for wood, it was well worth the little bit of warmth it gave off. After being there and working in the freezing weather for a month, Lina and Jonas's mother became ill. She had also found out from an NKVD officer that her husband had died. This sent her into a depression and Lina and Jonas did everything they could to help, but it wasn't enough. She died a few days later. Lina and Jonas knew it was coming, but couldn't stand knowing they'd never see their mother or papa again. They kept trudging on however, and doing whatever they could to survive. A few weeks later, Jonas became very ill. He had the same illness his mother had, and was doing worse much quicker than the mother had. Lina helped him in every way she could, not wanting to lose him. A few days later while Lina was consoling him, she heard some noise outside. A doctor from Germany was here trying to help people. The reason why he was there was because he was an inspector and the NKVD officers didn't want a bad report, so they let them help the prisoners. Lina got him to help Jonas and he gave him some medicine that made him better within a couple weeks. Joyous and excited, Lina left the hut to go get some more fire wood, knowing that everything was getting better very slowly. As she was walking to find wood, she reached into her pocket and fingered the stone. As she did, she knew she was going to see Andrius again some day, and hopefully very soon.
