The Postmistress 1-42
The book starts in the present tense with people talking about what a disaster it would've been if a postmistress would've just kept letters instead of delivering them back before technology such as cell phones and computers was around. This lady brings it up at a dinner party, and all the guests kind of laugh at the idea. However, when she says that this actually happened, all the dinner guests are appalled. It foreshadows that that's what the book is going to be about. There are three main characters so far: Emma, Frankie, and Iris. Emma is moving to a new town with her new doctor husband. She seems very innocent and girlish. Frankie broadcasts stories about the war from London where it is taking place. She seems very tough. Iris is the postmistress of their town. All of them are affected by the war taking place overseas.
