The Maze Runner 125-224

As Thomas waited, he realized that the griever was right below him. It was just standing there, not moving an inch. Then all of a sudden, it lit up and started climbing up the wall, after Thomas. Thomas realized he had to divert the griever away from Alby who was still hanging on the wall near lifeless. Thomas started jumping all over the wall, swinging from vine to vine, trying to evade the griever. When he realized this was working, he hit the ground and started to run, the griever chasing him. He kept running until her ran into Minho. They then were against four grievers instead of just one. They began to run, with all four chasing after them. They then found the end of the maze that was a cliff. Minho had been there before, but of course, Thomas never had. They then stood there, watching the grievers catch them. Thomas then had an idea, he stood there waiting for the grievers to get to him and just in time he stepped to the side, having the grievers fall to their certain death off of the clif. After that, Thomas hit the ground and began to cry. When he was done, the sun began to shine, it was morning. Thomas and Minho then realized they had to get back to Alby, still hanging on the wall. When they arrived, they got him off of the wall and went back inside the Glade, with people crowding around them. They were the first to survive a night outside of the Glade. They then rushed Alby to the Med-Jack and he began the changing. Thomas was then questioned all day by Newt and others. All of the Keepers decided that Thomas would serve one day in jail and then become a runner. At this, Gally got mad and left in a hurry, many thinking that he left the Glad and went into the maze.  Thomas also went and saw the girl and Newt wanted him to see if he recognized anything about her. As they sat there, Thomas began to hear a voice inside of his head, a girl voice. She began by telling him her name and telling him that Thomas and her did this, to them and to us. Thomas then ran out and ran into the maze until the voices stopped. When he stopped he realized he had been running for an hour and went back to the Glade. The next day, he served his sentence in jail. Alby was then cured and came to get Thomas out of jail. He had told Thomas that he saw him in his memories, beings the changing brings back some memories, but he couldn't tell Thomas much about them or he felt the need to strangle himself. It was like somebody could control his body and didn't want him to tell anybody anything. The next day, Thomas set out with Minho to explore the maze and was shown all of the ropes. When they got back, Thomas was so exhausted he went straight to bed. The next morning, he woke up an hour late, to a dreary gray sky. This had never happened before in the Glade, it was always sunny there. Minho then came over to Thomas who was in awe as much as everyone else and said they had to go. They then began running into the maze, but after the first corner they ran into a griever. He was just sitting there, like he was dead. Much like Minho's previous encounter. After a couple of peeks around the corner, Minho realized he was gone. They then began following it, having never seen but a few grievers during the day. They followed it all the way until the cliff, and it jumped off into they abyss and just disappeared. This struck Thomas and Minho odd and so they decided to try throwing stones into the abyss and see what happened. They then collected many stones and started throwing them over the cliff, watching very carefully. After having done half of the open surface of the cliff, they almost wanted to give up, but Thomas threw a few more and all of a sudden, a stone just vanished. Then another. They kept throwing them until they found out that the hole was no more than a few square feet, barely large enough for grievers to fit through. They then decided, if the grievers can escape that way, why can't we? And they headed back for the Glade.

The Scorch Trials Book Response

Title: The Scorch Trials
Author: James Dashner
Year of Publication: 2010
Number of Pages: 360
I. Plot Summary:
Thomas and his friends are out of the Glade and into the real world. After escaping the Glade and taken by some strangers to safety they learn that it was all a false lie. Teresa is taken from Thomas and replaced with a boy named Aris who tells them there is another group that came from a Glade but all girls. They are all put to another test and given the Flare a hideous disease that turns people crazy. They have to walk through the Scorch Trials and make it to the other side of it to get the cure. Many complications would arise and this would be more of a challenge for them than they have ever faced before.
II. Literary Elements:
A. Narrator- Third Person- "Thomas shifted in his bed, felt a darkness around him." p.1
B. Protagonist- Thomas- he is the Glader's leader and is projected to be the answer to WICKED's trails and all that they have been through." No one else dies, Thomas said. The senseless killing had to end." p.347
C. Antagonist- The Flare- The disease Thomas and his friends are given that breaks down the mind and body leaving behind a crazy zombie like person when the final stages happen. "If it weren't for the stupid Flare, I think the world would pull through in the long run." p.203
 D. Setting- The Scorch- " In front of him, a flat pan of dry and lifeless earth stretched as far as he could see. Not a single tree. Not a bush. No hills or valleys. Just an orange-yellow sea of dust and rocks; waving currents of heated air boiled on the horizon like steam, floating upward, as if any life out there were melting toward the cloudless and pale blue." p.95
 E. Conflict- It is both man vs. man and man vs. self. It was Thomas against the Cranks and other monsters of the Scorch and ultimately trying to beat WICKED. It was also man vs. self because everything was already predetermined for them so they were constantly second guessing what they needed to do and the Flare slowly breaking down their brain so they had to fight their own thoughts.
F. Theme- Nothing is certain and your own fate is what you make it. Rise up against tyranny and follow your best instincts. No matter how bad things seem to get your friends will always be there to take on the challenges with you. " No more fear. No more shock. No more questioning. Take what comes. Play along. Pass the tests. Pass the Trials." p.346

III. Reflection- I liked this book very much. After reading the first one I feel that it is just as good if not better than the first one. I was interested the whole way through it wondering what was going to happen next. There was a lot of surprises through out the whole book and plenty of action and just as much mystery as the previous book. Some questions are answered in this book but more questions arise. I think anybody who likes to read adventure or mystery books would enjoy this book very much would find something interesting about it.

The Scorch Trials 325-360

Thomas and all the people sit down and decide to wait for something to happen around the stick with Safe Haven written on it. They had an hour left before whatever they needed to be there for would come. They talk for a little bit and they watch as one of those storms are approaching them rapidly. Then while waiting the ground away from them shits and opens up. Everyone watches as these coffin like pods rise from the ground and then it all hits Thomas like a brick. He has seen those pods somewhere else before in the Maze. He remembers those pods are where the grievers used to stay in and charge up or whatever they did when they hid. Everyone else recognizes them to then the tension between everybody could be cut with a knife. Soon the pods opened and these disfigured people with out faces begin to climb out of them. These hideous orange glowing bulbs all over their bodies. They walked slowly toward the Gladers and Group B. They gathered all the weapons they could there would be one for each person and then ran and rushed toward the monsters. Thomas cut his machete into its leg and it did not even flinch. Then it clicked in his head after fighting it for awhile they need to pop all of the glowing orange bubbles on its bodies and soon everyone realized this. He finally killed it and then he could hear lightening booms from the storm so they all rush into the pods for safety and shut them. He heard a buzzing from outside and leave the pod its a huge ship and the doors opening they all rush to get on board many helping each other onto the ship as it lifted off. Most of everybody made it onto it. A man comes out with a gun and threatens to kill Jorge and Brenda and made Thomas choose which one but he knocks him down and takes his gun and told him he was tired of all the senseless killing. He lets the decision go and lets everybody shower and eat. Thomas laid on a couch and falls asleep. He wakes up to Teresa in his head in a white room wearing white clothes by himself. He stays in there for weeks secluded by himself and tells Teresa to leave him alone since she hurt him and he feels himself losing his sanity.

When he wakes up another door opens and Teresa is standing there crying telling him how she is sorry and it was all an act but Thomas is to heartbroken to care. She explains that it was what she was told to do or WICKED was going to kill Thomas so she had to put on this whole act. They finally catch up with Group B and the Gladers. Thomas makes his way to the front where a stick is stuck in the ground with a ribbon on it that says in big bold letters. SAFE HAVEN

Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Marcus, and Peter reach the Amity headquarters and are welcome to stay the night. They are very helpful, giving them medicine and new clothes. The next day the Amity will have a meeting to discuss whether they can stay there or not.

Divergent 403-487

Everyone is having a good time at the Initiation Ceremony. The top ten are shown and Tris is first, Peter is fifth, Will is sixth, and Christina is seventh. During the celebration, Tris figures out why they injected them with that tracking device and how the Erudite are going to get the Dauntless to fight for them. Tris awakens that night to see that everyone is getting dressed silently. No one says a word and moves like robots. Confused, Tris decides to act like them so the Dauntless leaders don't get suspicious about her. All of them head into a room to get armed with guns and then head to the train tracks, where Tris sees Tobias. They stick together while they get off the train and walk through the Abnegation sector. There are gunshots as she sees a council member killed by Tori, the one who gave Tris her aptitude test. Eric sees Tobias and is going to shoot him, but Tris points her gun at Eric. She shoots him in the foot and the two take off running. Tris gets shot in the shoulder and they get captured. The soldiers take them to Jeanine, who tells them her plans and about a new simulation serum she created. This one is improved so even Divergent people can't manipulate it. She gives the serum to Tobias and leaves Tris to be executed. Tris then wakes up from being knocked out in a glass tank connected to a water tank. As the tank is filled and Tris is about to die, she sees her mother. Her mother breaks the glass and they run through the building. She tells Tris that she is also Divergent and where their family is. As they are running, her mother sacrifices herself to save Tris from getting killed. She gets to her family and tells them what happened. They get a plan made up. They take the train back to the Dauntless headquarters. This is where the computers are at that are controlling the soldiers. When they get there, they find Peter guarding the compound. He isn't a mindless soldier because they reviewed his records and took him out of it. After Tris shoots him in the arm, he asks if he can go with them and Tris agrees. Then, Tris and her father head up to the control room. Once again, her father sacrifices himself to save Tris. She gets to the control room and sees Tobias sitting there. He is still in the simulation and thinks she is an enemy. After they fight for awhile, he finally breaks out of the simulation. He then starts pressing buttons on the computer and eventually, it works. They see soldiers on the screens drop their weapons. They meet back up with Caleb and Marcus, Tobias's father. They decide to get on the train to head to the Amity sector.

The Maze Runner 25-124

Thomas is still trying to look for answers. Why he's there, what this place is, and how he got there. Nobody seems to want to tell him much though, and say he'll learn in time. The second day he was there, another person appeared in the box. Before now, their was only one person that would come out of the box at the same time every month, and it was always a boy. In the past two days though, Thomas appeared, and today another person appeared, a girl. They grabbed her out of the box and thought she was dead. The leaders asked Thomas if he knew her because they figured they had to be related somehow. Thomas didn't have any memories of the girl, although to him she did seem strangely familiar in some way. He didn't tell the people that though, thinking that he shouldn't share things with them if they don't with him. The girl then woke up and sat straight up staring off. She just looked at the people around her and said "I'm the last one." and then she hit the ground. She still was breathing though, so they took her to the "doctor" to take care of her. None of the people knew exactly what this meant, so they were a bit nervous, but knew that they just had to press on. The next day, Thomas was awoken to go and start a job search. They had all sorts of jobs that had to be done in the Glade, and they were going to try Thomas out at every single one to find out which suits him best. Thomas already had a hunch though, that he had to be a runner. Something in his mind just knew that that's what he was supposed to do. A runner was a person who went outside the Glad during the day, into the maze, to try and find a way out. In two years, the runners have found nothing, knowing that the maze somehow changes every day. Before nightfall, the runners have to come sprinting back so they aren't attacked by grievers. These grievers come out at night, and sometimes during the day, and will kill anything that's out there. The next day, Thomas goes to work as a person who takes care of the animals. He likes this better than the day before, as a slaughterer, but he still knows he needs to be a runner. Later in the day, a couple hours before nightfall, one of the runners, Minho, comes back and tells Alby, one of the leaders, that he has found a dead griever. Thomas knew that this had never happened before by the look on Alby's face when Minho told him. Alby then decided they would go out tomorrow to look at it instead of today, beings it was almost dark. The next day, Newt, the other leader, looked worried over supper. Thomas asked him why, and he said that Alby and Minho should have been back already. It was only a few hours until dark. This lead Thomas to keep a constant watch on the doors of the Glade. A couple minutes before the doors were going to close, Thomas spotted the two coming back. He noticed that Minho was carrying Alby, and that neither one of them looked good. Thomas had asked earlier if they should send a search party after the two beings the rest of the Glade was worried, but Newt had informed him that that was against the code because they would rather lose only those people, than many more. But as Thomas watched the two walk, he knew they weren't going to make it in time. They were still too far away and the doors were seconds from closing. Newt yelled at Thomas not to, but he knew he couldn't leave them out there. Thomas ran through the almost shut doors, and out into the maze. The doors then closed behind him, not opening again until sunrise. Minho asked why Thomas did that, and Thomas said he couldn't leave them, but Minho was just mad that Thomas did that because now he was going to die too. Minho didn't have a positive attitude whatsoever about living, knowing for sure that the grievers would get them. Thomas then asked what happened, and Minho said that the "dead griever" wasn't really dead and that it attacked them. Alby was unable to walk and barely responsive. The sun then fell in the sky and they could hear grievers coming. Minho and Thomas propped Alby against the wall, Minho thinking that he was a goner. Minho then said they had to split up in order to survive and he took off. Thomas didn't know what to do, knowing that he couldn't leave Alby there, but he couldn't carry him either. He then noticed that their were vines hanging from the Glade's doors. He slowly tied Alby to the viens propping him up, until they were about 30 feet up the wall. Knowing that he couldn't go up any higher with his lack of energy left, Thomas hoped that this would be enough to at least fight them off one at a time.

The Scorch Trials 125-225

They continued their journey into the town and just on the outside a old man was laying on the ground looking up into the sky. They tried to get his attention by talking to him and trying to figure out what he is doing on the ground. He was unresponsive then Thomas decides to get a little physical and yell a little then the old man looked at him. He told him they need to leave because something bad was going to happen. He also said that they like to come out at night and this worried Thomas. The wind picks up and lightening starts to strike the ground very violently so they run to building that was about 20 minutes away. Thomas runs and here screams and shouts and lightening striking very close to him. He finally makes it into the building along with other stragglers. He could not hear anything and his heart was about ready to pound out of his chest. Time passes by and he could hear the rain outside the lightening went away and Thomas's hearing began to return to him. They sit there in silence and Thomas and Minho decide to get things rolling again so they take a role count of everyone who survived and they were down to eleven people left. When they were discussing what to do next a strange man came down from the top of the building and leaped into the middle of them and introduced himself as Jorge. He tells them that he has been sent here awhile ago and have been living here since then and he was a Crank. Minho and Jorge start to argue about something and they get in a scuffle and Jorge kicks Minho and he goes down to his knees then Jorge kicks him in the same place. Then Minho kicks him back and puts Jorge onto the ground and gets ontop of him and starts wailing on him with his fists then Thomas tackles him off of him. Everybody settles and Thomas invites Jorge to listen to why they are here and tries to get him to help him. He explains the situation to Jorge and promises him the cure if he can help him across the plains. He agrees to the plan but does not want everyone to know about it just Jorge and another girl by the name of Brenda. Jorge agrees to the plan but on one term and it was that Minho dies. Thomas did not agree with this plan and convinces Jorge that is not worth it. He agrees and they both go out to the room where everybody was at. He tells all of the other Cranks that they are going to share their food with the Gladers and to not hurt them. Brenda had a knife to Minhos neck and Jorge says that he wants to cut off one finger on each of Minho's hands. They lead them down to the food storage deeper into the giant building. Brenda takes a huge liking to Thomas and sits with him as he eats and talks to him for a long time. As they were eating the roof of the building explodes and everything comes tumbling down and Brenda and Thomas run off into the tunnels of the underground away from the explosion to get away but are cut off from everyone else. They decide to keep going through the tunnels because it was the quickest way out into the city. They move farther into the tunnels and stop to take a break. They sit against the wall and then all of a sudden they hear a light bulb break down the tunnel. They wait then they hear another. A far gone Crank approaches them missing half of its face. They run away from it and find a place to hide in a small crawl space under a table. They wait there for the Cranks to leave then one grabs Thomas in the small space and he tackles it to the ground. Brenda pins it up against the ground face first and Thomas grabs the dagger and stabs it through the heart and kills it. They make it out to the streets and find shelter in a old vehicle and decide to crash there for the night. They fall asleep holding each other and wait for morning to come.

After getting a tattoo of the Abnegation symbol, Tris, Will, and Christina throw newspapers that the Erudite released into the chasm. They talk about Jeanine, the leader of the Erudite, who, they believe, is trying to overthrow the government. As they are walking back, Tris decides to follow Four. Four invites her into his fear landscape, which makes a person face their fears one at a time. He only has four fears, which is incredible. In one of his fears, Tris figures out that Four's real name is Tobias. They talk for awhile afterward and eventually, Tobias kisses Tris. The next day is fear landscape day for the initiates. As they get a demonstration about it, Tris breaks down when she is in one of the fears and Tobias yells at her. She leaves, furious, and heads to the train tracks. She gets on the train and heads to the Erudite part of town to find Caleb. She finds him in the Erudite headquarters, where they talk about the Erudite and how they hate Abnegation. Caleb tells her that something big is going to happen, but he doesn't know what. Tris tells him the research the simulation serum when she leaves. As she is walking, two guys grab her and tell her that she needs to go with them. They take her to Jeanine's office, where she interrogates Tris about why her aptitude test and simulation results didn't show up right away.  After arguing for awhile, Tris heads back to Dauntless headquarters, where Eric is waiting for her. Eric yells at her for awhile before Tobias comes and defends her. Later that night, Tris and Tobias sneak out and head to the Erudite part of the city. Tobias tells Tris that he was able to get into Dauntless's security files and saw war plans from the Erudite. The two of them come to the conclusion that the Erudite might want to go to war with Abnegation and use Dauntless to help them. The next day is the initiation ceremony. The final part of initiation is today, which is going into their fear landscapes and seeing how they do. When Tris goes into her landscape, she faces crows, drowning in a tank and an ocean, being set on fire, featureless men attacking her, having sex with Tobias, and shooting her family. After the landscape, Eric injects her with a tracking device so she can't run away. Every Dauntless member has had this done to them. After that is all done, Tris and Tobias head to Tobias's apartment.

Ky is determined to run away to find Cassia. Him, Vick, and Eli are all planning a get away. Ky thinks the best time is during the night when there is a full moon and when they are being attacked. They decided they would go to the Carving and talk about the rest of their plan there. Cassia on the other hand is also planning to run away. Her, Indie, and the rest of the workers are now considered Aberrations and are getting moved to the Outer Provinces, which is where all the fighting takes place. All the girls were not happy about being moved here because they all knew they were going to die. Cassia was excited because this got her closer to finally being with Ky. When all the girls were getting loaded onto the aircraft to be taken away, Indie tried to make a run for it. Of course the Officials caught her and brought her back. They put handcuffs on her to keep her from planning another escape. Cassia thinks Indie is very smart and has another plan. As they were flying toward the Outer Provinces, all the girls got searched and a new set of plainclothes. Cassia had something to hide, which were the tablets Xander gave her. Indie also had something to hide. They agreed to let each other hold their keepsakes while they were being searched. After that was over with, Indie still had to keep her handcuffs on. Cassia just sat on the aircraft thinking. She was thinking about how to plan her escape to go find Ky. Cassia has no idea what to expect in the Outer Provinces other than to protect herself and look for Ky.

The Maze Runner 1-24

Thomas woke up in total darkness. He was scared, confused, and alone and had no idea what was going on. He could hear metal clinking around him, and after an hour in the darkness he hears something above him and a hatch opens and bright light shows in. Some kids his age and older pull him out of a mysterious giant black box. He has never seen any of this before and has no idea where he is at. Thomas can not remember anything from the past other than his first name. He learns that he showed up at somewhere called the Glade and its where all of these kids have been sent and nobody knows why. Outside of the gigantic walls is a maze that runs around the glade. He learns all of the different jobs that are done there and befriends a goofy kid named Chuck. Thomas also witnesses what they call "The Changing" and wants to know more about what happens when this is done. All he could see before getting shut out of the room was a bloody, nasty looking kid on a table, moaning and screaming with two guys around him. Thomas never thought he'd be able to eat again after seeing that. Once he left though, Chuck brought him a sandwich and he scarfed it down very quickly. He then noticed that the Glade was open up to what looked like a maze on the outside. Chuck told Thomas that the gap closed at night and that the two walls slid two close the gap. Thomas could not believe that the huge stone walls could slide, until he witnessed it.

Where She Went Book Response

Title: Where She Went
Author: Gayle Forman
Year of Publication: 2011
Number of Pages: 260

I. Plot Summary:
Adam is a rockstar that lives in L.A., but is in New York and is about to go on tour with his band. Adam is starting to have second thoughts about being in the band because he has lost his love for music. Ever since three years ago, when his high school girlfriend lost her family, she broke up with him and he did not know why. This has bothered him for the past three years and all he wants to know is what happened. The night before he's supposed to leave on tour, he sees that his old girlfriend, Mia, is playing a cellist concert in the concert hall. He then goes in to the concert and sees her and they spend that whole night and the next day together, and end up falling in love all over again.
II. Literary Elements:
A. Narrator- First Person- "Every morning I wake up and I tell myself this..." p.1
B. Protagonist- Adam- he is the rock star who used to be wild, but now has lost that and just wants to be in touch with Mia. "Wild Man..Hes the only one who is allowed to call me that anymore. Its a take off of my last name, Wilde" p. 10
C. Antagonist- Mia- She broke up with Adam after her family died in a car crash, and Adam has no idea why she did it and is determined to find out why. "An image of Mia flashes before my eyes. Seventeen years old, those dark eyes full of love, intensity, fear, music, sex, magic, grief. Her freezing hands. My freezing hands still holding this glass of ice water."
D. Setting- In New York- " I need a cigarette before I go in, so Aldous and I stand outside in the blinding midday sun as a crowd of people gathers and checks me out while pretending not to. That's the difference between New York and the rest of the world."
E. Conflict- It is both man vs. man and man vs. self. Its Adam vs. Mia, Adam vs. Himself, and Adam vs. the band. "You sure this is what you want? he'd asked. It wasn't what I wanted. But I couldn't have what I wanted."
F. Theme- No matter how much a person may want something, you can't always have it, but if a person waits, they may get it eventually. "Yeah but some things you cant control, no matter how hard you try."
G. Historical Context- Just as it happens in many fairy tales and in this book, Mia almost dies, but she lives just to be with Adam. And then, in the end, they wind up together, loving each other. " You made me stay" p. 188
III. Reflection- I did like this book very much because it had a great story line behind it and was somewhat touching. It somewhat reminded me of the series "Enclave" and "Outpost" because it was a love story as well and the two main characters in it, also ended up together. I do think it would make a good movie because it would make a great romantic movie and love story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys anticipating what is going to happen in a book and enjoys a romantic love story. The book did end the way I expected because I figured Adam and Mia would end up together eventually.

A woman was standing outside not moving and Thomas decides he would go find out who it is. She runs into the building and Thomas follows. It was Theresa but she looked clean and better than she ever did and he tried talking to her. She screamed for him to get away but then jumped towards him and wrapped her arms around him and kissed him then pushed him away telling him that they need to leave now or they will all die. Thomas realized that she was under WICKED's control and trusted her and he ran off leaving everyone behind so they all followed. They ran for hours and finally stopped to rest. He fell asleep later and dreamed he was sitting with Theresa who told him to try harder and that she was not going to talk to him tell he did and so he promised he would try his best for her.

Where She Went 185-260

After Mia and Adam went back and forth for awhile longer, Adam finally got it out of her. Mia told Adam that she left because she hated him. He had promised her when she was in a coma that if she lived then he would do whatever he could for her and do anything for her. All he wanted was for her to live. He doesn't realize how she knows this because she was in a coma, but he asks her why. She tells him that she hated him because he made her stay, when the rest of her family had died. At that, she started to walk away. He wanted to stop her and explain and try to make it work, but he then realized that he had to let her go. He had promised to her that he would do what was best for her then, and he realized what was best for her now was for him to let go. He didn't want to, but knew he had to. Adam then went and ran downtown and got in a cab, but Mia was there, waiting for him. She wanted to talk to him more, and couldn't leave it at that. They then went to Mia's house and fell asleep on the couch, with their heads at opposite sides of each other. When Adam awoke after a couple hours, he went into the kitchen and made coffee, which woke Mia up. They then said a few more words and as Adam was about to leave, Mia said she wanted to show him something. They went upstairs and to Adam's surprise, Mia had his old guitar that he had auctioned off at a charity event two years earlier. It was his favorite guitar and he missed it more than anything. He was shocked that Mia had it and couldn't believe it. They then started playing together like they used to, Mia on her cello and Adam on his guitar. They played for hours, not caring what time it was or where they had to be. When they were done, they talked some more about how they felt. Mia told Adam that she thought she pushed him away because she was the one he loved the most. Adam knew then that they were meant to be together. He made a few phone calls, breaking up with Bryn, and sat back down with Mia. They then began to dance and hold each other close and finally kissed each other. This is the feeling that Adam had been waiting for for three years. They then went back in the house and awoke in Mia's bed the next morning. When Adam awoke, Mia was sitting alone in the corner of the room with a disappointed, saddened, look on her face. Adam asked her what was wrong and she said that this was great, but it was just one night. They both had their careers ahead of them and she didn't know what to think. Adam then told her that they would make it work, no matter what. Adam decided to go on the last tour with the band and then be done with them. He would then go with Mia to all of her concerts and be her number one fan. Mia didn't want him to do all of this for her, but he explained it all and she finally agreed. Mia then asked if she could go on tour with Adam, which he never thought would happened because when they used to date in highschool she didn't like "sharing" Adam with all of his fans. Adam loved the idea though, and she went. When they got there, they met up with the band and explained everything. They then got ready for their first set on stage. This was the first time in three years that Adam actually felt comfortable on stage. Mia was just to the left of it and was just as excited and happy as Adam. The band then began to play and was up to their last song. The last song was one Adam wrote, for Mia. He began to sing and as he did he walked closer and closer to Mia, singing the lyrics of the song. These lyrics, were their new vow.

Divergent 203-303

That night after the rankings were shown, Edward, who ranked first, got stabbed in the eye by Peter, who got second. In the morning, Edward's bunk was striped clean and so was Myra's, who ranked last. The other two to get cut were Dauntless-born. Later on that day, Tris runs into the Dauntless-born initiates and they invite her to one of their initiation rituals. They get on a train and head to the tallest building in the north part of the city. They climb about a thousand feet to the top where there is a cable with a pulley that goes from the top down to the ground. One by one, the initiates hook up to the cable and fly down to the ground. Tris was scared at first but loved it after she did it. Stage two of initiation begins on the next morning. Everyone sits in a dark hallway, getting called into a room one by one. When it's her turn, Tris goes into the room and sees a chair very similar to the one she sat in during the aptitude test. Four explains to her that the simulation will be about facing your fears. He gives Tris a shot to begin the simulation. She ends up in a field being attacked by millions of crows. She gets out of simulation three times faster than any other of the initiates. After that, she heads back to the dormitory, where everyone is huddled around Peter, who is reading an article from the newspaper. The article bashed Abnegation and questioned how much longer they would stay a faction. This angers Tris, so she leaves the dormitory and sees Four. He is with a group of people and is drunk. There is another simulation the next day. This time she is trapped in a glass box at is filling with water. Everyone is around watching her and she calls for help, but no one does anything. Suddenly, she realizes that it's not real and calms down to think of a plan. She decides to hit the glass until it breaks, and then the simulation is over. Four has never seen that before. He figures out she is Divergent. He tells her that if anyone else finds out she will end up dead and that she needs to find out how to hide it. He deletes the footage of the simulation so no one will see it. Five days have passed, and so have five more simulations. Everyone is extremely bothered by the simulations except Tris. Then, Eric gives them the rankings as sort of a progress report. Tris is first, Peter is second. That night, Tris gets out of bed to get a drink of water and hears people talking in the hall. It is Eric and some other girl. They are talking about the initiation and if there are any Divergents in the group. Just before she leaves, someone grabs Tris from behind and throws cloth over her face so she can't see. She figures out it is Peter, Drew, and Al. After struggling for awhile, they finally got her up on the railing at the edge of the chasm. Then Four comes in and saves her. Tris sleeps in Four's room that night. The next day is boring. Al tried apologizing to Tris but she didn't accept the apology. Then on the next day, she finds out the Al committed suicide by jumping into the chasm.

Where She Went 85 -184

After they left the park, they went to eat at some place that Mia had been to many times before. It doesn't seem like a place that a famous cellist would go, but all of the people that worked there knew her really well. After they ate, they went to the subway and walked all around town. During this time, they kept talking to each other, but never brought up the past. He however, kept thinking about how much he missed her and that all he wanted to do was ask what happened back then. During this time, he keeps flashing back to the past and thinking about all of the things that has happened. He thinks about when they went camping, and Mia was always afraid to go, but she ended up going with him. They stayed out on some old logging paths and set up a tent and just talked all night. Adam had made them burgers for supper over an open fire and had set up the tent for Mia. As they laid there and talked they told each other they wanted to be together forever.
After going to the subway, they went and bowled for awhile. They used to bowl together all the time, but Mia decided not to so Ben bowled for the bother of them. After bowling, they kept walking around town and decided to go see the statue of liberty. During this time is when the past came up. They had started talking about what had happened to Mia's parents and brother and things like that, and Adam wanted to blurt out "What happened with us?!", but didn't know if he should or not. Then he decided he needed to have a smoke, and when he did, Mia said he should quit. She said that "quitting isn't hard, it's deciding to quit that is hard." All of a sudden Adam just blurted out "is that how you quit me?" and just like that, it was all out on the table. Then she says, "so...he finally says it." and Adam replies, "was I not supposed to?" Mia starts to explain by saying that Adam couldn't be himself around her and that he never really talked to her. He kept firing back and telling her that he tried everything he could to reach out to her (and he really did), but nothing was working. After she went to college she started not to return his calls and just left him...alone. With no explanation. Mia said that it wasn't just him, it was both of them. And that nobody could be themselves around her, but that he hardly even touched her. He told her that he tried to but she freaked and he just wanted her to heal. She said that that was just one time, but he just said that he just wanted her to be okay. She replied by saying "I know, you just wanted to rescue me." And he gets upset because she says it like its a bad thing. Mia then says that she knew he was just trying to help, but it felt, at the time, that he was more of just pushing her away.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian 101-200

It was thanksgiving and Junior kept wondering about what Indians have to be thankful for. And all this wondering made him miss Rowdy even more. So he drew a cartoon of him and Rowdy and went over to his house to give it to him. Rowdy's dad answered and when he gave it to him, Rowdy's dad made a remark about if he was gay and then slammed the door in his face. After really getting to know Penelope, he learns a lot about her. She says she is tired of being the pretty, popular, and smart girl and wants something different. She tells Junior her dreams and what she wants to do with her life. This is when they start to 'semi-date' and instantly Junior becomes more popular. Everyone starts to pay more attention to him, even the teachers do. After people get to know him better and hang out with him, he is scared of the fact that they might find out the truth about him. And that truth was that he was poor, dirt poor. He acted middle class just to fit in with everyone. He didn't want people to think less of him and then stop hanging out with him or talk to him. So the winter formal comes up, and he plans on taking Penelope. He is really nervous because people might definitely find out the truth. He only had five dollars in his pocket and he had to wear his dad's suit from the 70's. He thought everyone would laugh at him. When he got there, everyone loved the old school look of his suit and wished they would have thought of doing the same thing. After a wonderful night of dancing every song with Penelope, Roger and all his upperclassmen friends decide to make a pancake run. Since Junior was pretty popular, Roger invited him and Penelope to come. He knows he has no money to pay for both him and Penelope, so he hopes that Penelope's dad will say no. Her father says yes, so they all pile into Roger's car and head over. He orders a huge mess of pancakes for him and Penelope knowing that he can't pay for it. As he makes a trip to the bathroom, Roger comes in and Junior tells him that he forgot his wallet. Roger kindly tells Junior not to worry about it and lends him forty dollars. After they get back to the school, Junior and Penelope get out of the car to have their good bye kiss and what not, and Penelope tells Junior that Roger told her what he did. Then she asks him if he is poor and he tells her the truth. After some convincing from his dad, Junior signs up for the basketball team. He figures he won't even make the team, but after an intense game of one-on-one with Roger, the coach realizes how determined and how great of a shooter he is, he makes the team. Their first game is against Wellpinit. After walking through the gym and getting yelled at by fans, the game starts. Not long after the game starts, Junior goes in and gets hit right in the forehead by a quarter a fan threw. As he goes back to the locker room bleeding, he asks Eugene, his dad's best friend, if he can stitch him up. He does so and goes back out the game. Once he is in, he gets the ball and goes for a lay-up, only to get knocked in the head with an elbow from Rowdy. This makes him go unconscious and gets sent to the hospital. As he is telling about how great his grandmother is and the tolerance she has, he tells about her getting killed by a drunk driver one night. This upsets him very much, and upsets the whole reservation. Through the whole thing, no one gave him crap about switching schools. Not long after, Eugene gets shot in the face by one of his drunk friends after an argument they had. After being put in jail, his friend felt so bad that he hung himself in jail. he went into a deep depression and didn't go to school for a couple days. Once he returned, the teacher gave him grief about missing so much school and all the kids got up, slammed their books on the ground, and walked out. Junior followed them, and that gave him a sense of joy. So then he started to write down all the things that made him happy, from famous basketball players to food. As the basketball season goes on, a rematch of Reardan and Wellpinit comes up. Junior is very nervous and throws up about every chance he gets. This time it was a home game, and Coach wanted him to start so he could guard Rowdy. As game tips off, Rowdy gets the ball and dashes for the hoop. Junior knew he was gonna dunk it, so instead of fouling him, he jumps like he has never jumped before and steals the ball right out of his hands and races back to his hoop. As Rowdy gets in front of him, he head fakes and makes Rowdy fall for it. He pulls up for a three and nails it. The crowd is going wild and Rowdy is stunned. Junior only made three points that game, but he held Rowdy to only four points. This was very proud moment, but suddenly Junior feels ashamed and runs into the bathroom and throws up and starts crying. After a great season, they end up losing to a terrible team in the playoffs and ends the season. He emails Rowdy and tells him he is sorry about what they did. He only replies back with " we'll beat you next year, and then you'll cry like the little faggot you are". Junior replies back with "I might be a faggot, but I'm the faggot who beat you." Rowdy's only response to that is "ha-ha."

Crossed 1-40

Ky is in a camp preparing for war. Him and someone else end up throwing a dead young boy in a river because people aren't suppose to die in these camps, they are suppose to train for war. Cassia's parents are trying to help her find Ky. She was sent to several camps where she has been doing lots of digging, planting, and hard labor. She moves from camp to camp so the Officials can monitor her working so they know where to classify her. Eventually, Cassia hopes to make it to one of the Outer Provinces and find Ky.

Matched 300-364

Since Cassia is a sorter, and is trying to get a good work position, she has to do a real life sort as a test. They take her to the place where Ky works and she has to sort the workers into two groups, which are the efficient and not so efficient workers. Ky is borderline either. Cassia doesn't want him to get stuck in this province, but then again she doesn't want him to leave her. She decides that he needs to go out an explore life, so she puts him in the more efficient group. One morning Cassia and her family woke up to some woman shrieking. They all went outside to see what the commotion was. The Officials were taking Ky and loading him on the air train. The Officials told the people that they were taking him to a new work position, but in all reality, most of them knew it wasn't true. Ky's parents or aunt and uncle told everyone that they were sending him to fight in the war in the Outer Provinces because we're losing it. They only took Ky because they were only taking all the Aberrations first. When Cassia and her family got back to the house, Cassia's mother received word that they will be moved to the farmlands of the Oria Province. Xander heard about this and he came to talk to Cassia. He gave her a few tools in which to help Ky because though they were still Matched, he knew that she was in love with Ky and not him. Cassia and her family got relocated to the farmlands. All Cassia could think about was finding Ky.

Divergent 103-203

The next day Tris has to fight Peter, and loses badly. Later on in the day, Four takes them to the fence that surrounds Chicago. The Dauntless protect the city by guarding this fence. While at the fence, Robert, an Abnegation that transferred to Amity, sees Tris and talks to her about how things are going. The conversation didn't last long as Four broke them up. On the next day, the transfers get to partake in a Dauntless tradition. They get to play a game of capture the flag using paintball guns. Four and Eric choose their teams and they all head out by train. They split up once they get to the spot. Tris is on Four's team. They head to an old amusement park and hide the flag on a merry-go-round. Tris and Four climb the Ferris wheel to get a better look at the area and find the other team. While they are climbing down a bar falls from underneath Tris and she is dangling high above the ground. Four hurries down and turns on the wheel so she reaches the ground safely. After that, they all go out and attack the other team and come out victorious. On the next morning, they get to practice throwing knives. It takes awhile for anyone to hit the targets. Al, a transfer from Erudite, is the last one to not hit a target. While Eric talks to him, he chucks a knife out of anger. Eric tells him to go pick it up but he refuses. This makes Eric very angry. He tells Al to stand in front of the target and not flinch while Four throws knives at him. Before a knife is thrown, Tris objects. She says that they are bullying them and that is cowardice of Eric. Now he makes Tris stand in front of the target. Four throws two knives, the last one an inch from her head. On the final knife, Four nicks Tris's ear. On the next morning, fighting starts again. Tris has to fight Molly, who she hates. During the fight, Tris finds Molly's weaknesses and takes her down. She wins the fight fairly easy, considering she was the underdog. They get the rest of the day off because tomorrow is Visiting Day, a day where a transfer's parents can come to visit them if they want. Surprisingly, Tris's mother comes to see her. After talking for awhile with some of the other transfers and their parents, her mom takes her into an empty hallway. She asks Tris about the initiation process and how she is ranked. Tris finally found out at this time that her mother was a Dauntless that transferred to Abnegation. Her mom also tells her to never say that she is Divergent and to visit Caleb after initiation to tell him to research the simulation serum. After everyone's parents are gone, the transfers head back to the dormitory to see their rankings. Out of the ten transfers, she is ranked sixth. Only the bottom four get kicked out. This also includes the Dauntless-born initiates. They will find out who will become factionless later.

II. Literary Elements-
A. Narrator- Third Person - "He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air" p. 1
B. Protagonist- Thomas - A boy who doesn't even know his last name who is willing to take risks and do things nobody has ever tried before to help his new friends. " Thomas knew he had no choice. He moved. Forward. He stepped into the Maze and the doors closed behind him." p.112
C. Antagonist- The Creators - The people who are responsible for putting these kids into the Maze and watch them. "Who does this to kids? The Creators." p.79
D. Setting- "They stood in a vast courtyard several times the size of a football field, surrounded by four enormous walls made of gray stone and covered in spots with thick ivy. The walls had to be hundreds of feet high and formed a perfect square around them." p. 5
E. Conflict- These kids were put into this Maze for many years and are told nothing about it and memories are wiped clean. They learn to live and grow food inside of the Maze in the Glade. The walls close around them every night protecting them from the Grievers that come out at night inside the Maze. When Thomas and the Girl shows up everything begins to go south. It is Man vs. Man the kids against the creators. Man vs. Self Thomas thinks that it is his fault all this is happening and feels bad.
F. Theme- The theme of this book is that no matter how bad things can get, your friends will be with you tell the end and will do anything to see it that each other makes it. Everything is darkest before its dawn too. No matter how bad things can get you have the power to go out and try to make it better. Another theme is rebellion. To rise up from the darkness and take your destiny into your own hands and break the rules for a better life. "Thomas knew he had no choice. He moved. Forward. He squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the Maze." p.112
G. Historical Context- This book signifies the control over people then rise of a rebellion and the fall of something big. The steps it takes to mustar up the courage to take on something huge with nothing to lose and death being the only other way out. " Tonight the Grievers better be the ones hiding because we are coming for the Creators." p. 330
III. Reflection- I very much enjoyed this book. It is very different from a lot of books I have read and it kept me interested throughout the whole thing. I would say if you like books that have a lot of mystery and adventure to it this would be a great book for you to read. I like the ending of the book because it leads to another book and leaves you with more questions to be answered and that only makes it all the more exciting.
