Gone With the Wind 301-400
Melanie, Aunt Pitty, and Scarlett become very concerned about Ashley because the lists of people dying just keep growing. Scarlett learns that many of her friends have died, but Ashley is still alive. Ashley comes home for Christmas, and Scarlett tells him that he loves her, and she kisses him. He kisses her back, but then he breaks away and tells her to watch over Melanie while he's gone, which leaves Scarlett confused. Shortly after Ashley leaves, Melanie announces to the family that she is pregnant, which breaks Scarlett's heart. The family also learns that Ashley has been captured. Scarlett begins to realize by talking to Rhett that the South is not winning the war. The southerners are still hoping and fighting, but it's starting to look bleak. Scarlett and Rhett are riding together, and Rhett tells Scarlett that he doesn't make a move on her because she is still childlishly in love with Ashley, which makes her really angry. The war moves into Atlanta, and nearly everyone is forced to fight, including Aunt Pitty's husband. After so much Confederate blood shed, Scarlett really wants to return to Tara, but she has to stay with Melanie since she's pregnant. One night during the middle of the battles, Scarlett is sitting on her porch and Rhett tells her that he likes her, but he's not in love with her, and asks her if she would like to be his mistress, which made Scarlett furious. Scarlett learns that her whole family is sick back at Tara, and she really wants to go back and take care of them, but she remembers her promise to Ashley to take care of Melanie, who is also sick, so she stays. She also promises to take care of Melanie's baby if anything happens to her. The Confederate army finally gives up Atlanta, and it's now totally under control of the Yankees. Melanie goes into labor, and neither Scarlett nor Prissy know how to deliver a baby, so Scarlett freaks out a little bit. Melanie gave birth to a baby boy, and Scarlett sent Prissy to go find Rhett to help them escape Atlanta. Rhett comes and gets them, but refuses to take them to Tara because there are many Yankee soldiers near there. He tells her that he is going to leave her to join the Confederate Army, and then he kisses her. She gets really overwhelmed with feelings and slaps him.
