Gone With the Wind 601-700
Scarlett marries Frank, and even though the whole town gossips about them and Suellen is devastated, she just ignores it. She only married him for the money anyway. However, she figures out that he is not a very good businessman. She thinks she could do a better job in the business world, so she wants to buy and run a sawmill. She sees Rhett Butler after he gets out of prison, and at first he chastises her for still being in love with Ashley, but then he agrees to loan her some money to purchase a sawmill, as long as she does not use the money to help Ashley. One night, Tony Fontaine, a friend of Scarlett's, shows up at Scarlett and Frank's saying that he killed a black man and another guy. He says he did so because they were saying rude things to his sister-in-law. Scarlett realizes how dangerous the South is becoming. Scarlett also finds out that she is pregnant, and Frank is very happy about it. Scarlett begins doing business with Yankees out of her new sawmill. A lot of the other Southerners frown upon it, and Scarlett doesn't really care for it much either, but she knows that she must do it to run a strong business. Scarlett begins seeing Rhett more frequently. She sort of feels drawn to Rhett because he is one of the only people who doesn't frown upon her being a business woman. Scarlett also finds out that her dad has died, so she sadly returns to Tara. When she's at Gerald's funeral, a man named Will Benteen tells her how her dad died. He says that Suellen got Gerald drunk and tried to trick him into signing an oath of loyalty to the Union, which would get her money. However, when he realized what he was about to do, he ripped up the paper and rode away on his horse. When he tried to jump a fence, he got bucked off and died. Will also tells Scarlett that he plans to marry Suellen.
