The Hunger Games 104-204
The Color Purple 1-100
Celie is living as a slave. She’s with her mom, and her siblings. Her slave-master rapes her, and she has two children by him. She’s not 100% sure what he did with the children, but she thinks he gave her first one up for adoption, and killed the second one. She has a sister named Nettie, and Nettie fell in love with a man, Mr. _____. Mr. _____ comes to the house to ask the Master’s permission to marry Nettie. Master says no, but he tells Mr. _____ that he can marry Celie. So, Mr. _____ takes Celie as his wife. Mr. _____ is not good to Celie, and he beats her. Nettie gets tired of living as a slave, so she comes to live with them. She stays for a while, and when she leaves, she promises that nothing but death can keep her from writing letters to Celie. She doesn't send a single letter though. One of Mr. _____’s children, Harpo, falls in love with a girl, Sofia. They end up getting married and having five children. Celie finds a picture of a girl, Shug Avery, and learns that she used to have a thing with Mr. _____. Shug Avery is a singer in clubs, and she’s kind of trampy, but she’s coming to their town, and she ends up living with Mr. _____ and Celie. Shug Avery gets to their house, and she’s very sick, so Celie takes care of her. Shug Avery is not the easiest to take care of, but she slowly gets better and better, and a lot more cheerful to be around. In the meantime, Sofia leaves Harpo. She leaves and takes all the kids with her. When she leaves, Harpo turns their old house into a tavern, and they have Shug perform there, to kind of “get back on her feet”. Shug is finally getting back to her normal self, so she tells Celie she’s going to leave. She can live on her own. Celie tells her that when she’s not around, Mr. _____ beats her, so Shug says she’ll stay as long as she has to. Harpo has a new girlfriend, and her name is Squeak. While Harpo and Squeak are together, Sofia comes back with a new boyfriend too. Squeak gets mad, and tells Sofia to leave because Harpo is her man now. Sofia leaves, and then, not too long after, she gets put in jail because she “disrespected the mayor’s wife”. Now, they’re trying to figure out how to get her out of jail.

Push 100-140
Precious continues to attend the “Each One Teach One” school. She always gets to school early, because she loves it. She’s also starting to really enjoy writing poetry. Precious is also going to counseling. Her counselor, Mrs. Weiss, tells her that her mother has been calling wanting to attend a counseling session with her. Precious isn’t sure how she feels about this. After her session, she steals her file folder out of Mrs. Weiss’ office to see what it says about her. She read that she only has a 2.8 reading level, but to get into G.E.D. Classes, she’ll need at least an 8.0. She also reads some things that Mrs. Weiss told her she wouldn’t put in the file, which makes her distrust Mrs. Weiss. Precious begins going to an Incest support group. She’d never realized that this happens to so many girls. The next day, her mother attends her counseling session. Her mother tells a bunch of lies about how Precious had a great childhood, how she was cared for well, and how she had really nice clothes. Precious took the reading test again, and this time she scored 7.8 on it, so she’s close to being able to earn her G.E.D. She knows she doesn’t have many years to live because of her HIV, but she decides she’s going to keep writing poetry, and be a great mom. She will be better to Abdul than her mom ever was to her.
Push 1-100
This book is about Precious Jones, a sixteen year old from Harlem. She is sexually abused by her father, and physically abused by her mother. When she was twelve years old, she had her father's child, and now, at age sixteen, she's pregnant with his child again. Her first child, Mongo, has Downs Syndrome and lives with Precious' grandma. Precious goes to a Harlem junior high school, even though she's old enough to be a junior, because she can't read, write, or even comprehend numbers. After an incident in math class where she cussed out the teacher, she was expelled from school. Her school guidance counselor, Mrs. Lichenstein, comes to her house and suggests that she goes to an alternative school, "Each One Teach One". The next Monday, Precious goes to her new alternative school. Her teacher at the new school is Ms. Rain. She also has several other girls in her class that are illiterate and all have problems at home as bad as she does. She learns the alphabet and how to count. Ms. Rain has the students write in a journal, and then she writes back to them. Precious decides she really likes writing, and she even writes some poems. Then, half way through the school year, she has her second child by her father, and names him Abdul. After her mother has a particularly violent night, Precious can't deal with the abuse anymore, so she runs away with Abdul and goes to a halfway house. Her mom comes to see her at the halfway house, and tells her that her father had AIDS, so she should probably get tested. Also, she said that her father had died. She gets tested, and it turns out she is HIV positive.
