Water for Elephants. P 1-100.

Mr. Jankowski (Jacob) is in the nursing home, and he sees the circus has come to town. He then starts to think back on when he was younger... After he heard his parents had both died in a car accident, Jacob wasnt sure what he was going to do. Talking with the esquire, Jacob finds out there is really nothing for him becuase his parents had put a second mortgage on the house and so the bank is taking everything they have. Jacobs life flips upside down. He is about ready to graduate college as a vet, but it doesnt matter anymore seeing as his father's practice has been taken away, along with everything else in Jacob's life. He goes back to college to take his final exam to be done, but he cant focus on anything and doesnt even end up making a single mark on the paper. As soon as he leaves the class, he starts walking. He just keeps walking on and on until he realizes he is very far from anywhere and has nothing but himself. A short time after, he hears a train coming and he gets up and tries to get on it. After a few attempts, he makes it. When he gets on the train he instantly is with others. They question him and one man tells him the train is the circus. He goes with Camel (old man on the train) to talk to Uncle Al (man in charge) about getting Jacob a job. At first Camel is unable to get Jacob a job, but after being there for awhile, they get connections for Uncle Al to talk with Jacob. It is here that Uncle Al learns that Jacob is basically a vet. August tells Uncle Al to allow Jacob to stay becuase they have a horse that has something wrong with it. So Jacob looks at the horse and eventually has to kill it. Since Jacob is the vet he is moving higher up on the ladder. He hangs out with August and Marlena a few times.(performers) Marlena is a performer he saw before and she is very appealing to him it seems and he notices that August has issues with the way his behavior is and at any point in time, he may snap.
