The Maze Runner 25-124
Thomas is still trying to look for answers. Why he's there, what this place is, and how he got there. Nobody seems to want to tell him much though, and say he'll learn in time. The second day he was there, another person appeared in the box. Before now, their was only one person that would come out of the box at the same time every month, and it was always a boy. In the past two days though, Thomas appeared, and today another person appeared, a girl. They grabbed her out of the box and thought she was dead. The leaders asked Thomas if he knew her because they figured they had to be related somehow. Thomas didn't have any memories of the girl, although to him she did seem strangely familiar in some way. He didn't tell the people that though, thinking that he shouldn't share things with them if they don't with him. The girl then woke up and sat straight up staring off. She just looked at the people around her and said "I'm the last one." and then she hit the ground. She still was breathing though, so they took her to the "doctor" to take care of her. None of the people knew exactly what this meant, so they were a bit nervous, but knew that they just had to press on. The next day, Thomas was awoken to go and start a job search. They had all sorts of jobs that had to be done in the Glade, and they were going to try Thomas out at every single one to find out which suits him best. Thomas already had a hunch though, that he had to be a runner. Something in his mind just knew that that's what he was supposed to do. A runner was a person who went outside the Glad during the day, into the maze, to try and find a way out. In two years, the runners have found nothing, knowing that the maze somehow changes every day. Before nightfall, the runners have to come sprinting back so they aren't attacked by grievers. These grievers come out at night, and sometimes during the day, and will kill anything that's out there. The next day, Thomas goes to work as a person who takes care of the animals. He likes this better than the day before, as a slaughterer, but he still knows he needs to be a runner. Later in the day, a couple hours before nightfall, one of the runners, Minho, comes back and tells Alby, one of the leaders, that he has found a dead griever. Thomas knew that this had never happened before by the look on Alby's face when Minho told him. Alby then decided they would go out tomorrow to look at it instead of today, beings it was almost dark. The next day, Newt, the other leader, looked worried over supper. Thomas asked him why, and he said that Alby and Minho should have been back already. It was only a few hours until dark. This lead Thomas to keep a constant watch on the doors of the Glade. A couple minutes before the doors were going to close, Thomas spotted the two coming back. He noticed that Minho was carrying Alby, and that neither one of them looked good. Thomas had asked earlier if they should send a search party after the two beings the rest of the Glade was worried, but Newt had informed him that that was against the code because they would rather lose only those people, than many more. But as Thomas watched the two walk, he knew they weren't going to make it in time. They were still too far away and the doors were seconds from closing. Newt yelled at Thomas not to, but he knew he couldn't leave them out there. Thomas ran through the almost shut doors, and out into the maze. The doors then closed behind him, not opening again until sunrise. Minho asked why Thomas did that, and Thomas said he couldn't leave them, but Minho was just mad that Thomas did that because now he was going to die too. Minho didn't have a positive attitude whatsoever about living, knowing for sure that the grievers would get them. Thomas then asked what happened, and Minho said that the "dead griever" wasn't really dead and that it attacked them. Alby was unable to walk and barely responsive. The sun then fell in the sky and they could hear grievers coming. Minho and Thomas propped Alby against the wall, Minho thinking that he was a goner. Minho then said they had to split up in order to survive and he took off. Thomas didn't know what to do, knowing that he couldn't leave Alby there, but he couldn't carry him either. He then noticed that their were vines hanging from the Glade's doors. He slowly tied Alby to the viens propping him up, until they were about 30 feet up the wall. Knowing that he couldn't go up any higher with his lack of energy left, Thomas hoped that this would be enough to at least fight them off one at a time.
