Gone With the Wind. P 600-700
The girls are all better and everyone does their part to make things in the house work. Soldiers come and stay as they make their long journey home. One comes by the name of Will. He has no family and nothing to go back to. He stays at Tara and then keeps staying there after he is healed. Scarlet likes Will and is respectful of him. He says that he will stay at Tara until he has repaid them for saving his life. He stays for quite some time and Scarlett even lets him take some charge in what goes on. He is the man of Tara, and takes care of the business issues that go on at Tara. Finally one day, Ashley comes back to Tara. Melly meets with him, and Scarlett is heart broken to see the two of them together. Ashley takes charge with Will and the two of them leave some of the business to Scarlett. Then the taxes are due, and Will returns from town saying that they need more money or the Tara will be sold and they will be put out on the streets. Scarlett goes to talk with Ashley about what to do. They are finally alone out in the woods. She asks him what to do, and she ends up talking about their feelings for each other. They say that they love each other and are kissing when Ashley stops and says he cannot be with her. That they will never be able to be with each other and that he is taking himself and his family and they are leaving. Scarlett says that there is no need for him to do that. Nothing will every happy with them again. She then heads to the house knowing that the only person with money to help her might be Rhett and she will have to make him marry her so she doesnt ever have to worry about money again. She makes the trip to Atlanta and finds out that Rhett is in jail and may possibly be hanged. She talks with him and has him almost has him convinced to marry her when he realizes what she is doing. He tells her he has no money, and even if he did, they wouldnt be able to get ahold of it. She leaves and is walking home when Frank Kennedy comes with a carriage. Frank has asked Suellen to marry him that Christmas before. She realized his carriage was nice and asked about finances. He told her that he was making good money doing what he was. Then Scarlett realized she may have a chance of getting him to marry her. She tells him everything going on at Tara and lies about Suellen marrying another boy so he no longer thinks of her. THen she begins her plan to make Frank purpose to her.
