The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian 1-100
This is a story of a fourteen year old Indian boy that has is quite different then most people. When he was born, he had too much cerebral spinal fluid on his brain. He had to get this sucked out and has had some brain damage with it. He is very susceptible of seizures, even though he hadn't had one in seven years. He also is far sighted in one eye and near sighted in the other, so he has to wear these big and ugly, black glasses. He was also born with 10 more teeth than the average human. His family was very poor and sometimes went to bed hungry. He really hopes to be a cartoonist so he can get out of the reservation and become rich and famous. Junior has one good friend-named Rowdy-and a pet dog that he feels is his true friend and really listens to him. One hot summer day, Oscar, his pet dog, was starting to get very sick from the heat. Since their family was poor, they couldn't take him to the vet. To put him out of his misery, Junior's dad takes him out back to put him down. Junior is majorly crushed by this and wants to give up. Rowdy tells him that if he goes away, no one would miss him except his family. So, he figured, why not gut it out? That is exactly what he did. One night they go to the annual powwow and these thirty year old triplets start picking on Junior. After beating him up, Rowdy comes and helps him up. That night, Rowdy goes into where they were passed out drunk and shaved their eyebrows and cut their hair. Junior was actually excited to start school, and to learn about geometry. Once he got his textbook, he realized how old it was because his mother had written her name in it when she was in high school. He got so mad that he threw his book. Unfortunately, it happen to hit Mr. P, an old, forgetful math teacher, right in the face, breaking his nose. The school suspends Junior. During Junior's suspension, Mr.
P meets with Junior to tell him about his sister's dream to be a romance
writer. He also tells him that he is not mad with him and that he needs to get out of this reservation. Junior transfers to Reardan High School, a school full of rich white
kids out in the country. Junior is the only Indian at Reardan besides
the team mascot. Even though he has troubles adjusting to the new school, Junior starts to like
Reardan. He starts to have a crush on this white girl named Penelope and makes
friends with a kid named Gordy. Junior tries to talk to Rowdy about
his crush on Penelope, but things have changed ever since he transferred to Reardan. On Halloween, Junior and Penelope both dress like homeless people. She said she is raising money by asking for spare change instead of candy on Halloween. He agrees to do the same for homeless Native Americans. That night, he gets jumped by three kids with frankenstein masks and takes his money.
