I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings 1-100
Maya and her brother Bailey are shipped off to Stamps, Arkansas because their parents got a divorce. Momma takes in Maya and Bailey as her own. Momma owns the only store in the black residential area of town. Maya is always concerned about her looks, because she thinks she is the ugly child. To her, Bailey is a very good looking younger brother. One day, Big Bailey, also known as Maya and Bailey's father, came to Stamps. After about a two week stay, he decides to send them back to St. Louis so they can visit their mother. Once they got to St. Louis, Bailey fell in love with his mother, Vivian, immediately. They both resembled each other beauty wise. Vivian introduced her children to her side of the family. She let them meet all their aunts, uncles, and grandparents. One morning, Mr. Freeman, Vivian's 'boyfriend', molested Maya. He threatened to kill Bailey if she ever told anyone about it. Maya honestly didn't find any wrong with it because she finally felt like someone loved her. She thought it was great to be wanted and held close. Mr. Freeman ignored Maya for a couple of weeks, but then it happened again. He again molested her. He wanted Maya to make it feel like it was all her fault. He wanted her to feel guilty, which she did. Maya never told anyone about anything because she knew that Mr. Freeman would kill Bailey, and she was not going to let that happen.
