Water for Elephants. P 100-200.
Mr. Janowski goes between the past and present. When he is remembering the past, he goes back when Uncle Al had made the clan pack everything up to jump over to another circus that had went out of business and was going to sell everything they had. Al was going to try to purchase on of the freaks that circus had had becuase he loves freaks. They go all the way there and Al goes and talks with the people who are in charge. He finally comes back to August, Marlena, and Jacob who are talking and tells August that the deal is done. August thinks he got the freak but when they start talking, he realizes that Al didnt, he got an elephant. After they get the elephant, Rosie, August is very upset because Al spent all the money to buy her and she wont listen to him at all. Once they get her loaded, they head to Chicago. When they get there August tells Jacob they are going out. They end up in this speakeasy and Marlena has a few drinks and asked Jacob to dance. They are getting very close when someone says the cops are coming. THey all run out, Marlena and Jacob together. They run down an alley and when they are alone, Jacob kisses her. She runs off and goes back to the circus grounds. The next day, Marlena does an act with Rosie and ends up getting hurt. After getting doctored, she keeps to herself and doesnt come out to see anyone. Jacob starts becoming very close with the animals, realizes he really likes Marlena, and how he really hates August. Also Camel (friend who helped get his job) has become paralyzed from drinking a certain liquor so Jacob stowed him away in his sleeping quarters so he doesn't get thrown off the train.
