When Squeak got to the prison to try to persuade them to let Sofia out, the prison guard raped her. Sofia got out of prison, and she got to go work for the mayor’s family, which to her is even worse than prison, because the mayor’s white. Squeak soon started singing. Her voice isn’t as big and powerful as Shug’s, but Shug wants Squeak to sing with her. Shug leaves for a while, and comes back at Christmas with a husband. Mr. _____ is jealous, because it’s no big secret that he loves Shug. Celie finds a letter from Nettie in the mailbox from her sister, Nettie. She’s really surprised, because she thought Nettie was dead. Well, she reads the letter and discovers that Nettie has been writing to her for a long time, but Mr. _____ is hiding the letters. She finds the letters in Mr. _____’s room and reads them all. When Nettie left Celie’s house after she visited years ago, Mr. _____ followed her out of town, and tried to kiss her. Nettie kicked him away, and that made him mad, so he told Nettie that Celie would never hear from him again. That’s why he’s been hiding the letters all these years. Celie finds out from the letters that Nettie left and needed a place to stay, so she went to the Reverend’s house. When she gets there, she notices that his kids look so much like Celie. She came to the conclusion that these were Celie’s kids that they had adopted. Well, he was about to go on a mission trip to Africa, so they invited Nettie to come along. She went to take care of the children and teach the children in Africa. When she’s there, the Reverend’s wife realizes that her children look a lot like Nettie. She thinks that her husband cheated on her a long time ago, and these are actually Nettie’s children. Nettie swears to her that this is not true, but she doesn’t believe her. Later that night, the reverend’s wife wakes up in the middle of the night, says she believes Nettie, and then she dies. In Africa, Olivia (the reverend’s daughter) goes to school. She’s the only girl there, because in this particular area, girls have basically no rights. All the boys at school exclude her because she’s a girl. Finally, another girl, Tashi, starts to come to the school. The people start to get used to the idea of girls learning with boys. There’s also a huge revelation in one of the letter’s from Nettie. The man that they thought was their father is not their father at all. He’s actually their stepfather. Their father was hanged. Celie decides she doesn’t believe in God anymore, because what kind of a God would do this to her?
