Gone With the Wind. P 100-200

Scarlet goes to the barbeque, and waits around to see what Ashley. The boys start talking about War and all of the boys end up getting involved. The girls go upstairs to take their afternoon naps so they will be ready for the ball that night, and Scarlet sneaks away to go and talk with Ashley. He is coming in from saying goodbye to people and Scarlet pulls him into the library to tell him that she loves him. She does and he tells her that he is in love with Melly and that Scarlet does not know what love is. She is too wild at heart for him and they are too different from one another and things would never work out. She gets very upset and starts saying very cruel things and ends up slapping him. He leaves and once she is alone, she realized that Mr. Rhett Butler was in the room with her and had heard everything. He said that she was not like regular girls and she was not a lady. She was very passionate about what she wanted. She said she never wanted to see Rhett every again and left the library hoping he wouldnt tell anyone what he has witnessed. She went to go upstairs to sleep with the other girls but she overheard them talking about her and how she was taking all the boys and got around with everyone. Then Honey Wilkes said how stupid Scarlet looked for talking with Charles that whole day becuase everyone knew that Honey and Charles were to be married. After hearing these things, Scarlet went downstairs where Charles found her. He said that he loved her and wanted to marry her. He also informed her that the war was starting. Since she was bitter toward Honey and upset over Ashley, she agreed to marry Charles. They had a short engagement and then he went off to war where he got sick and died at camp. Scarlet was upset that she had married and that she had had Charles's child, Wade. She did not want to be widowed or a mother. Everyone assumed she was depressed because Charles had died but she just wanted to go back to being her youthful self. She ends up going to Atlanta to live with Melly and Charles's Aunt Pittypat. She works at the hospital helping with the soldiers. She really likes Atlanta because it is so busy and full of life. Then one day, a few women from the hospital committee come and say they need help with the ball that night because a few women cannot make it anymore. Melanie, pittypat, and Scarlett end up all going to the ball. Once there Scarlett realizes she really cares nothing about the war or anything going on. She also sees Rhett. He comes and talks with her and says how she is unlike any girl. He then offers money to dance with her when Dr. Meade is auctioning off the women to dances to raise money. Rhett pays alot of money and when the other women say she cannot dance, Scarlett says she can. Its for the cause she says, but both her and Rhett know that she really doesnt care about the cause and just wanted to dance.
