Flowers For Algernon 101-200
Charlie's relationship with Alice doesn't work out. He has emotional barriers when he's around her that he just can't break down. Charlie continues to recall memories of his abusive mother, his perfect sister, and his quiet father. Professors Nemur and Strauss are preparing to take Charlie and Algernon to a science conference to "display" them to the science world. Charlie doesn't feel like they're treating him as a person. He gets really upset. He thinks that Nemur and Strauss are just frauds. He realizes that they've made a huge mistake in the project; they haven't discovered whether the smartness will reverse. He freaks out and runs out of the science conference with Algernon and they go to New York. Charlie rents an apartment and meets his new neighbor, Fay. Fay is a very free-spirited, almost hippy-like, artist. She ends up sleeping with Charlie more than once as he's trying to break down his emotional barriers. He realizes that even though he's really smart intellectually, he's still at the same emotional level as he was before his surgery, and this really bothers him.
