Between Shades of Gray 141-240
Over the next few weeks Lina, Jonas, and their mother continued to work in the fields for long hours every day, only receiving little rations of bread to eat. They were awaken every other night and ordered to the Captain's office to see if they would sign the papers to commit to twenty five years of labor. After awhile, some people started to give in so they would be able to sleep every night and hoping they would receive better treatment. Lina, her brother, and mother continued to refuse to sign however, along with many other people. Andrius's mother chose to sleep with the officers in order to keep her and Andrius safe. By doing this, Andrius and his mother both received better treatment as well as better care and more food. Beings Andrius had access to more food, he sneaked food out in order to give it to other people, including Lina and her family, who needed it more. Once winter arose, people were getting sick and many were dying. Jonas had gotten sick with a fever and nearly died, but another woman brewed him some special tea that ridded him of his illness. He slowly became more able and had gotten better after about two weeks. One day after Lina had gotten off of work, Andrius came running into her hut and told her that officers were coming to get her. When the officers came, they took her to the captain's office and handed her a big sheet of paper and colored pencils. They told her that she had to draw the captain's portrait. The captain then came into the room and set Lina's open file on his desk. He began to read it and said to her in broken English, "You're and artist?" Lina nodded her head and began to draw. When she was finished the captain took the drawing and gazed at it with a smile. He then left the room and told her to leave. As she walked out she grabbed her file and started to run back to her hut. Andrius then caught up to her and asked her what had happened. She told him and then told him about the file as she showed it to him. He was mad at her for taking the risk, but translated the Russian for her. The folder had information about her papa in it and told her that he was in a prison. Their was one word that he said he did not know however, and couldn't translate. Andrius then took the folder and took it back to the captain's office. A week later was Lina's sixteenth birthday. They threw a small party for her and Andrius had gotten her a book. She opened the present outside and when she saw it, she was overwhelmed with joy and gave Andrius a kiss on the lips, thanking him. A few days later, Andrius found Lina in the ration line and pulled her aside. He told her that people were starting to be separated and taken away, but he did not know why. He told Lina that Her and her families' names were on the list, but his wasn't.
